My adventure on both playthroughs...

I left the vault in search of water. Came up against a rat. Killed it, but, lost a lot of health. Another wild rat appears. I die.

100% this, I tried to play it a few times over the years and always the same result. I did make it out of the cave once, but then was killed by rad scorpions. I think a lot of the love is from nostalgia.

Exactly my experience, glad it's not just me! I have a few friends who absolutely swear by the first two games but they played them when they first came out, I came to them after Fallout 3 and just couldn't get into them.

I really like the idea of a Fallout game set in '76 but I'm a little skeptical about the online component, still going to remain open minded until we hear more though. Fallout 3 and New Vegas are two of my favourite games but I did lose interest in 4, despite putting about 20 hours into it. Really need to go back at some point but not sure whether or not to pick up my old save from early 2017 or start over fresh.

I've actually restarted 4 to see if my impressions hold true. To be honest I'm having a lot of fun with the town building again, mainly due to the mods I've installed which automate a lot of the busywork and provide a shitton more options.

The quests are...ok. The Pridwin is still awesome, as is the way they handled Power Armour. The main quest is still dull AF.

Luckily, the various mods I've whacked on make the thing look fantastic, remove the stupid dialogue wheel and generally make things much better. I've also put it down to easy because, who plays Fallout for the combat? The writing is still lazy and boring, and the characters little more than a collection of unimaginative tropes, and it's obviously still the worst numbered Fallout title, but it's not a terrible game.

I do hope Bethesda takes some cues from the decidedly muted reaction this is getting, haven't spoken to anyone yet who isn't uneasy about an online Fallout.
Also I was drunkenly fanboying over New Vegas with a friend last night, she's just got into Dead Money and discussing the DLC made me sad that I never got chance to finish Lonesome Road before my brother took the PS3 away :(

:D It's so easy to get waylaid isn't it! Must have started so many games over the year and just lost my way and not gone back until its so late I may as well restart, I've mostly got out of that now but still ends up happening from time to time!

I might need to have a look into mods before I restart it, I modded the heck out of 3 and New Vegas on my last playthroughs and it really did lift the experience!

Oh my goodness, you need to mod it if playing on PC. I don't think I could play the un-modded version anymore.

You didn't ask, but here's a quick guide:

-Go to https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/
-Download Nexus Mod Manager https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/modmanager/ (you'll need to create an account if you don't have one, but it's worth it)

The Manager will scan for the games it supports and should find F4. Having the manager means that you any mods you download will appear in its Mods list and a simple double click will activate them. It's also super easy to deactivate/delete them too.

The mods I'm using are (ordered in level of necessity):

- Unofficial Fallout 4 patch
- Full Dialogue Interface
- Enhanced Wasteland Preset (not compatible with Manager and requires a manual install, but has probably the biggest effect visually)
- True Storms (probably the most visually impressive mod, the new weather conditions it adds are exceptional)
- Enhanced Lights and FX
- Darker nights
- Sim Settlements (turns settlements into Sim City: place a themed plot (residential, commercial, industrial etc) and your settlers will build and upgrade their own houses/shops/scarpyards etc.)
- Workshop Synth Production (create your own Synth settlers. Comes with the Body Scanner gun, which allows you to scan any NPC and create multiple copies of them. The Land of Piper awaits...)
- Armorsmith Extended
- Everyone's Best Friend (allow for Dogmeat + another companion)
- Weightless Junk
- Dynavision Depth of Field
- Enhanced Blood Textures
- Spring cleaning (scrap everything at settlements, including grass and concrete decals)
- FO4 Rain

...and a load of other little tweaks. It's almost a completely different experience now.

Another great guide here, from PC Gamer

Thank you! That's really helpful, I first played it at launch (Before I learnt my lesson about NOT buying games at launch!) so I don't believe there were many mods available at the time. I have used Nexus before with previous Bethesda games so should be able to get this sorted without a hitch! This has definitely moved Fallout 4 further up the 'to play' list!

So is this a survival game then? I'm loving Conan Exiles, so a similar game in the Fallout universe would be a day one from me.

I must admit that the more I think about it, the more I think it could work. I was obsessed with Subnautica for a while, though I bounced off games like The Forest, The Long Dark and Rust, and the idea of it having a narrative as well as base building and survival is interesting.

I dunno. Like I say, it's not what I wanted but that doesn't mean it's going to be a disaster.

So are the whiny babies coming round to this yet?

Essentially, always online Fallout. Still the same game except with multiplayer. Hyped.

I mean the CG trailer seems quite Fallout, but until I can see some actual gameplay I can't say I'm overly enthusiastic about the whole always online multiplayer element.

Looks pretty much like you'd expect for a Fallout game with online.

I wonder (hope I suppose) if there'll be some servers where PVP isn't enabled everywhere and is only in certain areas. If it's Always PVP all the time I can see it just being a grief nightmare within a week.

Nope, in fact I think this has put me off the franchise for good.

I grew up playing Fallout as I loved the world. The game itself was fairly rote in terms of gameplay and graphics, but the writing and story were unsurpassed. The imagination on display was amazing. Fallout 3 continued some of this, and was a fresh take, and I ended up enjoying it immensely even if the writing was rather subpar. Vegas, created by a lot of the original writers, was excellent.

Its now obvious Bethesda are taking a different route. Fallout 4 turned the series into an action RPG where the writing seemed almost secondary to things like base building and shooting. 76 continues this and is the Fallout 4 equivalent of GTA Online, bundled as a separate game. For a series once known for its story, the fact that there was not a single line of dialogue demoed, nor any hint given to the plot, spoke volumes.

This is not a game for me.

Yeah I’m out. I don’t want call of duty apocalypse. Like other stuff have said Fallout 4 was a massive backward step in that every quest ended with shooting someone. None of the variety of skill set or multiple paths to complete objectives that the earlier games had.

I just can’t see how you can have any role playing in a game where there are loads of people running around shooting everything in sight. Just won’t work. How can multiple people persuade their way to an outcome, or stealth it, or use intelligence to come up with creative outcome etc. Quests will not work in an online game aside from kill everything (my biggest criticism of F4)

Doesn’t look like Fallout plus online at all.

Howard says every other player is a real person. Sounds like no NPCs.

It looks like a survival game with some control point stuff around the nukes and then going into the nuke zones is a bit like Dark Zones in The Division.

The Overseer who gives you quests seems to be a disembodied voice.

So basically if you like Bethesda narrative and morally ambiguous decision making, then tough nuggies. If, on the other hand, you’ve ever played a Fallout and thought “hey, these shooting mechanics are great, I’d love to play a multiplayer shooter based around these,” then you’re in luck but should also seek help.
