Fallout 76 is the score it wishes it had on metacritic

Depends on what you're judging as fair. It's unarguably not what most people want from a Fallout game, which is a valid criticism, but I also do think that colours people's judgment of the game in all other respects.

Personally I find the disparate reviews between 76 and F4 really odd because both fail pretty miserably at being RPGs compared to New Vegas and even F3, but I enjoy both for roughly the same reasons - the world exploration and base building, which I think are actually better so far on balance in 76. Any criticisms I have of 76 about not being my perfect "Fallout" game also apply to F4.

For me 76 takes the good parts of F4 and avoids its failings as an RPG by not being an RPG. My dream Fallout game would be a sequel in the style of New Vegas, and while 76 is very far from that I'm enjoying it for what it is - which perhaps crucially is also what I was expecting it to be.

EDIT: Also perhaps of interest to someone, I had my first crash last night, along with a bugged out terminal which meant I had to restart the game. So that's two game restarts in about 15 hours so far. Very frustrating, but actually not as bad as I was expecting
