Why worry about profit later when you can have it now.

Bingo. Just one of the myriad reasons why capitalism is doomed to collapse. Exponential growth with finite resources is mathematically impossible, but no one has told the markets that.

The games industry has and will ride any franchise into the ground in the pursuit of more and more money, and doesn't pay any attention or learn when it happens to someone else.

The overall brand is far more important than individual quality of any given title, people will preorder it for full price because the hype machine still works and fallout is a big name. I bet that for the next one they talk about 'returning to an immersive, hand-crafted single player experience' and that they 'have listened to fan feedback and appreciate the community's passion'. I'm sure Jim has done a video on this, how the industry will push and push until everyone gets pissed off and then throw their previous work under the bus and beg for forgiveness before starting the whole sordid thing all over again.

I feel Bathesda will have 1 last Chance with Starfield and if they don't show they have listened and changed things drastically and made a new engine they may as well just call it a day. I think they will have way less people pre-ordering because of the current mess and they will have to be careful how they promote the game or they will be completely destroyed by critics who will rightly point out the mistakes they made with promises for Fallout 76.

I think Todd Howard needs to step back and let someone else do the marketing as he's pretty much killed his own credibility and they also need to stop it with the microtransaction and other gooseberry fool like the Rum debacle.

Starfield needs to be great with at most only cosmetic stuff available to buy with free extra content after launch which pretty much everyone does now (Division 2 and Anthem) to even be considered worth a look.

Yeah he's gone full Molyneux now, but he's not the problem. As has been pointed out the problem is that the games industry is just that these days...an industry. Visceral Games was shuttered by EA not because they weren't making money, but because they weren't making enough money. Telltale Games was run by opportunists who massively overextended their budget and took a hugely talented design team down with them.

This year has seen a huge uptick in game dev unionisation efforts which is a good first step, but it's been fought tooth and nail by publishers. Unless there is a real change in working practices and profit expectations, we can expect more and more Fallout 76s as pubs seek to cash in on brands built by others and adored by fans.

The unionisation aspect isn't being helped by some Americans who for some reason feel that being part of a union and being able to try and stop the bad practices like enforced overtime during prolonged crunch times is somehow unAmerican.

That's because American employers literally run anti-union propaganda videos to their employees,

And Walmart have shut down branches purely because the employees attempted to unionise.

One of the standout factoids from that Kotaku article on R* was that the staff in their Scottish offices had fairly regular working hours and if they had to work overtime they got paid for it. This is because the UK has laws to protect basic worker rights. The US has no such laws and the staff in the offices over there suffered accordingly.

It's like the way many Americans are gooseberry fool scared of communism even though even if there was a US communist party it would get strawberry float all votes.
The UK has communist political parties and nobody cares as they get strawberry float all attention because they're mainly racist twats who get nowhere near enough votes to do anything and we don't all automatically think worst case scenario about everything.

The fact that in that video they can say that people becoming friendly with people they wouldn't normally also shows just how much companies in the US spy on their own workers and are afraid of them. US conservatives shout about the left being pussies while at the same time shitting themselves on a regular basis about anyone considering asking for better working conditions or immigrants.

It's pretty amazing to watch.

It's the American dream, if you are poor you aren't working hard enough if you accept charity you are relying on others and a failure, you have to make it for you!

In the UK we also have laws that say we're allowed to join a union and a company can't stop you.

I like most of Jim Sterling's videos; I think it's a good thing that he shines a light on many of the poor decisions / actions undertaken by game developers and publishers.

Just watched this one and it does, in my opinion, feel a bit vindictive. A game function went wrong on 1 January and the fault was fixed during one hour of downtime on 2 January. Sure, the bombs are a big feature but it's not really "the main thing"; most players probably haven't been in a position to activate them.

At one point Sterling rants that Bethesda "had no business doing an always-online game" and I think this is the crux of the matter. Some folk were disappointed that Bethesda decided to create an offshoot in the series that was an online multiplayer game and it seems that they can't get over it. I'm not gonna defend the bugs, the lack of cohesive story, the (non-)canvas bags nor the Atom Store pricing - and it is Bethesda's own fault about those points - but I do think that the generalised "Fallout 76 is terrible / doesn't work" stories are wearing a bit thin now.

I haven't played for a few weeks but it feels like time to take another look. From my experience of playing, I thought the environments were great (good-looking and expansive) and the feel of exploration was good. I didn't like the fighting (it's hard to aim and VATS seemed to be very janky) and, yeah, the lack of human NPCs feels a bit odd. Camp-building was fun and the aspect of this that I had trouble with - trying to re-position your camp - has apparently been improved now with a fix. I'll take a look and find out!

To be fair to F76, glitched nukes is hardly the worst thing that's happened to the game and I do feel like it has become so much of a laughing stock that any and all minor bugs are now being thrown up as catastrophic.

What I found far more interesting was the below:

https://www.polygon.com/2019/1/2/181636 ... de-vendors

Fallout 76 getting new PvP mode, player vending, but the economy is broken

[...]

Caps make up the in-game economy of Fallout 76; they’re the in-universe currency of every Fallout title. Fallout 76 makes it quite hard to scavenge a huge amount of caps in one sitting; vendors only have 200 caps on them at a time, and that’s shared across the server. While you can go to the Whitesprings and hit up a wide selection of vendors in the Resort and Enclave bunker in one go, you’re still only going to make a few hundred caps at a time. Supermutants and Scorched will have a small amount of caps in their loot table; picking up two to four at a time is the norm. Players are restricted to having 25,000 caps.

For a casual player, this is no problem. Caps are used for fast traveling and moving your CAMP, but they’re also a progression and content gate. If you’re interested in CAMP building and dolly dress up, then you’re going to want to save up your caps to buy the in-game items off vendors.

Or, you could just search “fallout 76 buy caps” on Google and treat yourself from an assortment of sites that promise safe, fast transactions of thousands of caps...

I believe this is the first sign that, unlike Destiny and No Man's Sky, F76 is a fundamentally broken game and no amount of patches or revamps will be able to save it except perhaps a complete ground up revamp which, given their conduct since launch, I highly doubt Bethesda will be willing to do.

During my experience of the early stages of the game, caps are hard to come by. The game as a whole is a little unwelcoming; the mechanisms are thrown at you pretty quickly at the start and it's hard to take in everything. I struggle with food; I seem to spend time trying to find / collect / make that rather then progressing the other objectives. I want to explore rather than be dying but I guess that's survival games!

My main bugbear is the fighting. VATS just doesn't seem to work and aiming is tricky; so far I have tended to fight "wars of attrition" using a knife or club rather than trying to aim with a gun.

My best experience was teaming-up with a higher-ranked player and we explored and battled our way through a town. It was fun and, as my team-mate had great armour and weapons, he could fight off the hordes of super-mutants (and I managed to pick up a decent gun and down a few, too :-) ).

Yeah, it feels like time to return to this.
