Gamestop was forming into one giant bubble, the ‘sell-only’ restrictions are still BS though

Their software is already in 175million cars worldwide. They're no longer a phone company.

I'm in for about 1,300 shares and will hold to at least $100. Obviously, I could be completely wrong.

I'm also heavy into Ethereum (approx. £100k at this point). If this has shown us anything, it's that we absolutely need to remove control of financial markets away from a single centralised point of control. I believe Ethereum will be the platform for decentralised finance and my price target is at least $10k.

Full disclosure, I'm not an expert by any means, I work in corporate banking but my role has nothing to do with this sort of thing. Overall I'm up about £140k over the last 10 months, though most of that is unrealised.

You could cash out £100k? What did you start with?

This stuff fascinates me. I just haven't got the balls to put any money down.

American users use Robinhood but I don't believe that's launched here and "market conditions" means its been indefinitely delayed:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jul/18/democratising-finance-for-all-an-investment-app-for-amateurs-and-a-student-traders-death

The UK alternative is probably Trading212. It allows commission free share purchases and also allows CFD investments which is how most of the spectacular percentage returns are achieved:

https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/spread-betting-and-contracts-for-difference

However "76% of users lose money using CFDs" so definitely not without risk!

I'm fairly confident Igor will be retiring this year. 10k Eth this year is the minimum imo.

Though I'm new to all of this so could be completely wrong :)

Well I made £14 interest on one of my savings accounts last year so I think I'm pretty handy at this stuff as well if anyone has any questions?

Big pump to a new all time high thanks to Elon. My portfolio has reached 5 figures for the first time. Feels like we could reach 50k USD this week.

Glad to see the "currency of the future" well on its way to incinerating the planet. Presumably Elon runs Tesla just as a carbon offsetting scheme against his bitcoin?

I'm pretty sure that's nonsense. But what does FIAT use? (not the car btw lol)

The global mining of bitcoin is a huge energy user, that much is fact.

It's also growing at a ridiculous rate (and will continue to as the inherent design is that the computational problem gets harder to solve over time and therefore consumes more energy). In mid-2019 that energy usage figure was less than half of what it is now.

The full methodology is here: https://cbeci.org/cbeci/methodology

While not 100% accurate as some assumptions have to be made, it's probably not far off the actual picture.

As for normal money, that doesn't need farms of computers to print or mint, or conduct transactions, the energy usage will be significantly less, verging on negligible.

Yep, most of the estimates (which come with well reasoned assumptions) I've seen show that Bitcoin uses more energy per transaction than all of the worlds banks do put together.

I just bought a small amount of Ethereum, despite not knowing what the strawberry float I'm doing.

That's the stupidest thing ive ever read on here i think.

Bitcoin mining uses 1/100th the energy of mining gold. So, i'd like to see where gold sits on that list above. And dont say gold get used for industrial purposes....yes it does but it's a tiny fraction.

Gold is considered Fiat? News to me.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/05/bitcoin-btc-surge-renews-worries-about-its-massive-carbon-footprint.html

Digiconomist estimates that the energy footprint of one bitcoin transaction is equivalent to 453,000 payments on the Visa network.
