Death's Head wrote:Getting a bit fed up with this now. Stuck on the Blood Starved Beast, got it down to a quarter health once or twice but probably had something like 10 attempts. I then go on a "round" to get experience to level up, but the problem I have is that there is nothing new to explore so the game is becoming a bit of a chore. It would be better if I had a few other places to explore so at least levelling up would be a bit more enjoyable.

Blood Starved Beast is one of the easiest bosses in the game when you know how. NEVER lock onto him, as sometimes you can't dodge out of the way quickly enough from one of his wilder attack patterns. Just run straight at him (yes, really) and roll under his right arm. If he does his leap thing after you roll he goes too far away to attack so just turn around and run at his right arm again in the same way, and roll under until he does a static-position attack, then you can get get 2 or 3 hits in on his side or back. Then he'll leap back a bit and you do the same run and roll bash bash thing over and over. He gets faster when his health is down but keep calm and do the same thing, remembering to avoid him when he stays still for a while before spewing out poison. Apply fire paper to your weapon if you have some to make the fight a little shorter.

Alternatively, using your knowledge that beasts are weak to fire, use some Fire Paper and laugh at how effective it is.

Or just ask someone here to help you.

Just a tip - you might want to use fire paper.

Also, I've heard fire paper works well.

Thanks VNG, made a world of difference (I.e. It died, I didn't). So next question, what to do with the chalice....

Use it on one of the many altars in the Hunter's Dream to make a basic Pthumeru dungeon. It's the start of your chalice journey. The first few dungeons you make will seem paradoxically fear-inducing, yet also a boring slog, as they don't have half the character of the main story levels and are full of bastard-hard enemies on the greater-depth chalices. But when you get used to them and start picking up powerful blood gems you'll start to love them.

Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos, you are a pain in the arse. Can barely scratch her before she just smangs me.

Not watched it all but I'll give the frontal attack a go next time as it seems to work well for you. Cheers :)

Taken a break from the main game to try out the Ailing Loran Chalice, which already has me impressed on the first floor. A mini sandstorm blowing about, little sparks of electricity dancing around and a section that's reminding me of Gerudo Valley from Ocarina of Time. Lovely stuff.

Went down the first dungeon last night. Last part I completed was the "heart". Is that the last part and I should now open up the next?

She is probably the toughest boss in the game, alongside Logarius and Gehrman, so no shame in getting splatted a few times. Ad7's vid will probably help, but here's my tuppence worth. Divide the fight into two halves: the first is the easy one, apart from the move when she rushes at you; the second is the harder one, unsurprisingly.

During the first half, lock onto her head and learn her moves (tentacle side swipes that you can easily dodge; tentacle front slam that you can easily dodge and get a cheeky hit in before she raises up again; blood-frenzy attacks that are even easier to dodge; and the dreaded charge attack which will probably bowl you over despite trying your best to dodge sideways) and bide your time until she gets exhausted and collapses headfirst in front of you, then you have time to use your powerful hold-R2 attack on her head. So best to get your attacks in after her front tentacle slam, and after collapse.

Once she's down below half her health, she goes into bastard mode, and creates a shimmering aura around her body that gradually eats away at your HP the longer you stay very close to her. Not a big problem though as it doesn't do much damage. The biggest problem comes in the form of two attacks: the first is the laser summon attack which sends three bursts of tracking beams your way. This is one point where you should unlock from her so you are free to run in any direction (not strafe), as just jogging consistently in one direction for the duration of the attack has the lasers land safely behind you; the second attack is her 'goes mental' one where it pays to be a good distance from her as she thrashes her tentacles about and can kill you easily if you are close.

If you find it too hard to safely land attacks on her during this phase (as there's less opportunity to do so), then there's a little bit of cheesing possible with her which makes it easier, as there are places in the arena where you can hide from her. A large vertical pillar on the left (from entering the arena) about half way, and a fallen pillar on the right (from entering the arena) about a third of the way. If you hide behind these when she's far enough away she'll slowly turn around and go back to the position she was in when you entered the arena - ie sat in the water facing away - and you can creep up behind her and get a power R2 move in on her and dash away to hide again and repeat. These hiding places also offer total protection from laser attacks.

The heart is where you fight the boss, and yes, that opens up the next layer which you can get to by going through the entrance nearest the heart lamp and down an elevator. Each layer has a main bit and a heart, and there's usually about 3 layers per dungeon, but some have 4 layers.

Strange, lit the lamp to return but didn't see any entrance for another layer. Is there a clear indication when a dungeon is complete?

The clearest indication is when the only door out of the arena you've beaten the boss in, is the door you came in. No fanfare to indicate it. Pretty sure that dungeon has 3 layers. Just looked up the bosses in there - have you beaten Undead Giant, Merciless Watchers, and Watchdog of the Old Lords?

Pretty certain I have, fought at least 3 bosses and the last was some kind of fire breathing creature which I think was Watchdog of the Old Lords. I'll consider that dungeon done.

Felt the dungeron was a bit stingy, didn't even get enough souls blood to level up once.

Yeah, that's you finished that one. Well done on beating the watchdog btw - it's a bit of a bastard. The dungeons that offer the greatest rewards (gems and caryll runes) are depth 5; that was only a depth 1. You'll not start to see great blood echo rewards until you hit ng+, where it goes up exponentially, along with the health and hit power of enemies.

Your main reason for continuing the pthumeru dungeon crawls at increasing depths is twofold: first, the game-altering radial gems and runes in the depth 5 randomly-generated 'Pthumeru Ihyll Root Chalice' that you'll eventually get; second, if you want to get a platinum trophy you'll need to work your way up to beat a reasonably difficult non-root dungeon with a certain boss at the end.

The Loran chalice (which you get for beating Amygdala) has the depth 5 'Lower Ailing Loran Root Chalice' which nets you good crescent gems, and runes), and the depth 5 'Isz Root Chalice' (which you get for beating Ebrietas) nets you good triangular gems, and runes).

I'm not fussed with getting a platinum trophy, just want to complete the main "story". Surprisingly, this dungeon was quite easy going. Other than the first boss, I killed all others first attempt. Got killed more by the grunts than the bosses!

I would guess that you're also not that bothered about NG+ runs either, then. Would that be right? If so, don't bother with the dungeons at all. You can complete the main story by gittin gud and upgrading your weapons with the blood stone chunks you'll find in later sections, and levelling up.

Correct, not fussed about NG+

However, I don't know what I'm supposed to do next! After defeating the Blood Starved Beast, there was nowhere obvious to go!
