Happy to take recommendations on weapons you would prefer me to use. If you want me to switch to using the cane then by all means I will do so and still ace it ;)

Summoning is for wimps! :P

I would be doing far worse if i hadn't come off the back of playing DS1 so recently. I've been trying to think back to how I got on in the early stages of that and which of the two games I think might be objectively harder. The Bell Gargoyles, Moonlight Butterfly and Capra Demon were all fairly early on in DS1 and I did find them tricky, but then Gascoigne was a bit of an arse at the start of this as well!

Oddly enough I tend to find early bosses in these games the hardest. I think after a break form playing this type of game it takes me a while to find my groove again.

Yeah I think I would agree with that where DS1 was concerned (and from my time with DS3 which I think I got about ~75% of the way through) - it never got easy but the real "banging your head against a wall" stuff was definitely in the earlier stages!

So I decided to follow up on that invitation from the clinic last night, hitching a ride in a totally un-suspicious empty and driver-less carriage from Hemwick which took me to a very impressive looking castle in a snowy region (and then the horses froze to death which is a bit sad :( ). Here's me posing outside, ready for some action: :datass:

twitter.com/RussellMcIver/status/1159574519222349838

Inside there were some strawberry floating annoying crawling, spider-esque creatures that looked a bit like a mini version of Amygdala - seriously these guys can strawberry float right off. Fortunately Hexx failed to mention that the Cane/Whip is MASSIVELY OP and has a RIDICULOUSLY HUGE hitbox for it's transformed R2 attack which basically smacks down anything anywhere in a wide arc front of you for about 5m!

So having whipped those guys into shape (and dealt with some doubly annoying little worm bastards as well!) I headed into the castle to be greeted by lots of weeping ghost ladies, clearly this place went through some bad times to be this haunted! Cleared out the hallways and up through the library, eventually making my way to a rooftop where I met Martyr Logarius.

He was an interesting one, some of his arcane magic attacks were a bit annoying, and that thing he does where swords start flying around was a pain until I realised you could kill the spawner for them (dude did it behind one of the towers first time so I hadn't spotted him put it down!) Eventually I went with a fairly cautious approach - stay back, keep moving, dash in for 1 or maybe 2 hits when he's vulnerable and then get the hell away again! Took a couple of goes but now he's down:

twitter.com/RussellMcIver/status/1159616340354879489

Grabbed his crown and have revealed that there is more to explore, but called it a night at that point!

Oh and as I forgot to post it yesterday, here is the final moments of my clumsy take down of Amygdala:

That camera really was annoying!

I haven't put any upgrades into the Cane and I couldn't be arsed going back to the Dream to upgrade before fighting him so I went with the axe on this occasion. Also need to up my skill stat to really make use of the cane.

I'm on level 70 I think. I've not been farming echoes or going out of my way to level up so I would hope I'm not over-levelled at this point. As I've died far less in this I have lost far fewer echoes than the souls I was losing during my DS1 run so that has probably helped me level up a bit. I think I've only failed to retrieve my echoes on one or two occasions and those only lost me a few thousand.

You're about the midpoint of recommended level for Cainhurst. So don't worry you're not overlevelled and using OP weapons ;)

I'm a big fan of the shoot/visceral combo (My FG kills was about 4 of those and then a moltov to the face...the video wouldn't save) - but it eats bullets. I tend to spend a lot of echos on bullets

Cool. I'll do some upgrades on the cane and then explore its options a bit more next time. I do like the R2 attack for the wide area of damage it does, doesn't seem to use up that much stamina either so combos should be powerful.

My axe technique means that shooting has been relatively rare thus far, so I have a gooseberry fool tonne of bullets in the bank to play around with!

Cane - ignore what it says about scaling with Arcane btw. That's kinda of misdirection.

Fair enough. I'm assuming the whip transform will be very useful against beasts?

I enjoyed using the cane against the standard enemies in Hemwick - zipping around them and chipping away at their health before they could strike back. :D

Anything serated is good against beasts. So your saw always will be, and alt form cane,

There's another type of damage that some things are vulnerable to - they're much rarer than beasts though so don't worry. Basic form cane does that.

Righteous or Church weapons are a subgroup of the regular weapons in Bloodborne. They deal additional damage to the "enemies of the Healing Church". T

Y'all just salty about my skills. ;)

I've been enjoying Cainhurst a lot so far, reminds me a bit of the Painted World from DS1, what with all the snow (and there's a snowy bit in DS3 if I recall right?) Hoping there's a fair amount more to it as I'll be sad if not!

How much enjoyment would one get out of this without a PS+ account? Is it essential to the experience like Dark Souls?

Another two bosses down tonight, both courtesy of Hexx's favourite weapon. You could say I'm still caning it! ;)

After my diversion to Cainhurst I returned to the Forbidden Woods to see what else I could have fun with there. Really love this area!

Modern gaming seems utterly petrified of allowing players to get lost and constantly works to signpost and funnel players down the desired path so it was incredibly refreshing to find that the Woods were basically one big strawberry float you to that view - the latter section being a big and twisted sequence of similar looking areas that really made you feel lost and kept you in your toes and paying attention to your surroundings!

Eventually made my way to the Shadows of Yharnam... who I promptly introduced to Mr Cane:

twitter.com/RussellMcIver/status/1160311976305844224

I liked the mix of attacks across the three enemies, each one giving you something else to think about as you try and keep them all in check. Locking on was still the way to go but did leave you with that classic feeling of "I bet one of them is sneaking around behind me"!

Next up was Byrgenwerth and this seems so far to just consist of an Observatory, an old dude who doesn't say much and a suspicious looking body of water... Yeah that's getting jumped into! :x

That brought me to Rom, the vacuous spider and his many little friends:

twitter.com/RussellMcIver/status/1160324150843662336

This was another fun fight, I quickly decided that the little dudes could be ignored and to concentrate on Rom. He had a fairly limited move set, once I learned when he was going to call down the crystals and to run/get back in time he wasn't too much trouble!

After a brief cutscene (lady covered in blood crying, unseen babies crying, big red moon - nice) I've been dumped back by the door round to the right of the Cathedral which is now open. Let's see what's next! :toot:

I played DS1 entirely offline and most of my time on this has been offline (as the PS4 keeps dropping my connection frequently enough that it got annoying to be kicked from the game!) and I have had an absolute blast with both games!

As far as I can tell the things I'm missing out on from playing this way are - random messages from other players and stuff like co-op, invasions and covenants. Personally I can take or leave that stuff so it hasn't bothered me.

Only other thing I can think was that the previously invisible monster in that room is now visible? And now I can see that it looks like Amygdala as well!

I stopped right at that point and haven't gone back to it since so there may be other things to spot. I'm sure the big strawberry float off red moon was important ;)
