If you pre-heat the oven the overall process takes longer even though the time the food spends in the oven is shorter.

It's not about overall time, but about consistency of the cook. If you sat something like frozen chips in a cold oven and allowed it to warm up, you'd have them partially defrost on the outside but stay colder inside, meaning they would be more prone to burning with the inner not being cooked enough. Putting them in at full heat ensures the heat gets to the middle faster for a more consistent cook.

If you don't preheat the oven when cooking a pizza you'll be prone to having a soggy bottom and overly hard crust.

I bet OR is the kind of guy to put something in a microwave for 30 seconds and then push the door open with 2 seconds to go :dread:

I've never been bothered by the quality of the chips I cook in the oven. Certainly not enough to justify spending any more time cooking them!

I'm sure you can cook them nicer but it's really not worth the effort.

I'm not a monster - I press the cancel button first, obviously. Nothing worse than the microwave being left on "pause" rather than reverting to the clock...

Indeed.

I just put the oven on to the temp it asks for and put the food straight in. Then after the amount of time it says it needs to cook I take a look at it - if its done great, if not I'll leave it a little longer until it is. It's not rocket science!

My dad was a slave to the timing on the back of packets, but he'd always set the oven too high. So you'd have say chips supposed to be in for 18 minutes at 180 fan assisted, and he's putting them in at 250, and absolutely would not open that door until 18 minutes was up, which always lead to incinerated food.

It is really difficult to just turn the oven on 5 minutes before you need it

Do you pre-boil a pan of water or just stick everything in whilst it's cold?

Whatever needs cooking is already in the pan before the kettle water is poured on, does this answer your question

I got randomly invited to participate in this when the show first started but I was at uni at the time and the letter was sent to my parents house so I missed out on the chance to serve up my burnt chips and soggy bottom pizza to a bunch of strangers sadly!

Not preheating your oven and boiling water in the kettle for pasta etc? Not a chance! Oven gets preheated and unless it contains vegetables a pan of water gets heated up from cold before the pasta gets put in and brought back to the boil. For veg like potatoes and steaming other vegetables they just go in from cold, purely as for a roast you can get the prep done earlier :capnscotty:

In answer to the origin question, definitely more of a Mark, set and forget the heating (although since the heating refused to work properly for a while I do run it once a week for a couple of hours, even in the summer for fear of it not working when you actually need it to!) over the winter, normally on about 20 ish, find it easier to just chuck a hoodie on if I’m feeling cold (which doesn’t happen often).

I got an invite sent to my parents house when I was at uni. Specifically to me, not anyone else in the house. For Couple's Come Dine With Me. I was single.
