WANTED

Lothar Bastium

For leaking classified YuriCorp dataslugs to multiple competitors

Until the last quartile Lothar has been an effective member of the YuriCorp operation in the REDACTED division. Internal investigation unit C3-12 has discovered that over the last 4 months Lothar has been responsible for the unauthorised access and export of over 25XBs of classified YuriCorp data to a number of our competitors.

A company lifer who showed no hesitation in submitting himself to the binding contract following completion of the education program, Lothar was not on the internal auditors watch-list. C3-12's investigation identified that Lothar's punishable activity began shortly after losing both his wife and son in the recent Entar incursion.

These events have no bearing on YuriCorp's position with respect to Lothar's crime. Human loss is an expected aspect of life in the sector, corporate advantage is not something which can be given away so easily. Lothar is currently attending a corporation productivity assessment on Station 12, deal with him efficiently and I will see that it is not unrewarded. -- Pye Mauser - YuriCorp Rectification Division

WANTED

Crazy Ignatius

For arson and theft

Crazy Ignatius has been reported for thievery of hot dogs from several vendors working the streets of Helix City and, more importantly, for the burning down and destruction of a local strip club. Dressing like a pirate of centuries gone by, he is easily recognised by a false eye patch and plastic cutlass which he has used to beat several victims over the head with. You'll probably hear Crazy Ignatius before you see him as he is reported to loudly, publicly rant against the debauchery and disgusting nature of modern life.

Here is my character.

Name: Yoama Lzarmi

Species: Ynla

The compact bodies and long limbs of the Ynlah'n are entirely covered in short, stiff hairs. While they are dextrous with all eight of their limbs, they usually walk on their hind four and use their front four for grasping. Each limb ends in two fingers and a thumb.

They are called "arachnoids" in the language of Earth. Humans who are expecting literal spider-people are sometimes surprised to see they have only two eyes, which are large and reflective--typically a shade of yellow--and bulge slightly from the sides of their heads.

Ynlah'n are not strong, and have no sense of taste or smell; but are fast and nimble, and can sense even minute vibrations through their body hair, giving them excellent hearing and awareness.

The brain of a Ynla is very different to that of a humanoid. Their thoughts are erratic, and their personalities eccentric tending towards impulsive, but they are gifted lateral thinkers and prized in any job that requires taking notice of details, problem-solving, or thinking outside the box.

Description:

Yoama is a little shorter than average, standing just under seven feet tall with legs straight, or about four feet tall when walking. Their hair is black with patchy grey markings, and their eyes are greenish yellow in colour and particularly bright and shiny.

Like almost all Ynlah'n of good standing, Yoama has had their venom sac removed but retains prominent sharp fangs.

They can be skittish and shy at times, but are also excitable and curious. They started a qualification in stardrive maintenance but found it difficult to stick to. Instead, they're now driven by a need to pursue their quest, and have found private detective work to be a suitable way to pay the bills--and make useful contacts.

Origin:

For decades there have been rumours of something unexplainable happening in the galaxy. There are stories of abduction, of mysterious markings on rogue planets, and ancient machines hidden away in government vaults.

Yoama always thought of it as sci-fi. But on their first flight away from their homeworld, Lo Amj, their shuttle crossed the path of something... unidentifiable. The sensors read empty space, but yet there the fragment was, rippling and inverting, its shiny corners not quite lining up with its edges in a way that Yoama could never afterwards describe.

Returning a few days later with some fellow students and a heavy-duty subspace imager (swiped from the college's ultraoptics lab), all that was left in the sector was the fading ion trail of an Earth military ship.

With no resources, no contacts, and no-one believing their story bar conspiracy theorists on the datanet, Yoama was despondent. And yet, they found themselves always looking up at the stars towards Sol, where the answers might be.

It was two years ago that they took the transport, and a year since their money ran out. Still, now they have the investigator job they're finally doing what they came to do: seeing places that shouldn't be seen and meeting people who shouldn't be met. If the fragment found them once, they reasoned, perhaps it might find them again.

Herman "Tap" Mannings - 600 credits reward - 748 words

Sat in a New Deimos dive bar sipping on what passed locally for whisky, Ansel Bishop scanned through the latest bounty postings on his communicator. He'd arrived in port a couple of days ago on a mining transport, and with credits in hand he'd spent a couple of days just learning the lay of the station. New Deimos was a typical corp-run mining hub, but it wasn't exclusively home to miners. Corp backing came with corp-provided utilities, and wherever there was good net coverage, there were hackers. One suspected local caught Ansel's eye - Herman "Tap" Mannings, wanted for blackmail. Not Ansel's usual kind of target, but 600 credits wasn't a price to shy away from, especially when the job came with apparently so few complications.

Almost subconciously Ansel tapped the right side of his head, feeling the smooth carbon plating flush behind his ear. Subaudible comms, top of the line tech courtesy of Tannhäuser - or telepathy to the layman. Ansel had paid a handsome credit himself after bailing on the corp to have custom firmware installed from some backbelt asteroid chop shop. It was worth the money, as a wanted bounty with an always open channel back to the corp quickly became a claimed bounty. Ironically enough Ansel's first scores had been with those who hadn't been so quick to learn that lesson. As impressive as his custom tech was however, it was likely nothing compared to what Mannings was sporting; one didn't become a wanted hacker without some serious neural modification. Out performing the target's tech was out of the question - Ansel would have to do this the old fashioned way.

Luckily he had a lead. "Tap" was a pseudonym, an anonymous net identity near impossible to track down. Not so for "Herman Manning". How the source had come to that name Ansel didn't know, but it looked like "Tap" had slipped up. Herman Manning was registered at an address in New Deimos' residential district as a dependent of one Anna Manning. A corp station meant corp rents - and corp records. Sometimes it felt too easy, Ansel mused, as he left the bar and headed for the vactrain.

-

Ansel looked up at the security camera above the apartment block entrance. The camera stared back unmoving, its red recording indicator conspiciously absent. Such was the state of the apartments, run down and dilapidated despite their relative modernity. The rents better lined sharehholder profits than being fed back into maintenance. On a whim Ansel tried the door, expecting resistance, but instead the door swung easily inwards, it's magnetic locks also unpowered. His good luck continued, Ansel thought. Mannings wouldn't even see him coming.

Anna Manning's apartment was on the first floor, so Ansel took the stairs, not even checking to see if the elevator was working. As he emerged onto the landing he readied his side arm - a standard issue Tannhäuser handgun with lethal and incapacitative settings - and moved towards the apartment door. Even from outside there was a potent smell, and the door itself Ansel could see had been drilled through from the other side, probably to fit some mechanical padlock. A surprisingly low tech solution, he thought, but perhaps expected given the unreliability of the landlord's upkeep of the maglocks. He switched his gun to lethal, took a breath, and then fired.

The door splintered, flying open as the padlock was shattered by the bullet, Ansel quickly following it through into the apartment. In one motion he switched his gun to stun, ignoring the piles of empty takeaway boxes as he made through the single living room-kitchen space and through another (unlocked) door to the bedroom. He was quick - inside was a half-mechanical half-sloth figure that could surely only be Herman, barely risen from his pod chair, wires still spewing from his wobbling appendages, eyes still readjusting to reality as he was jolted unceremeniously out from whatever virtual world had been occupying him. He started to shout, raising an arm holding what looked like a game controller, and Ansel fired.

Sparks flew from the pod machinery as Herman writhed from the coursing electricity, and a moment later he dropped to the floor, unconcious and with smoking augments. Ansel checked the room, and then back into the apartment, but there was no sign of any other. Anna Mannings, as he expected, was long departed, and the corp records outdated. As long as the rent was being paid, they had probably never checked. It would make the cleanup easier.

OP updated! Looking very healthy now - really impressed by all those bounty postings!

Love that character too Karl - very much in favour of more non-humanoid species

I just want to say what an amazing idea for a game this is and I've loved reading all the stories so far. I particularly enjoyed reading the capture of Herman Manning as there's just something so incredibly satisfying about creating a character and then seeing how someone else has interpreted them and their situation.

It's nothing bad! And I liked the premise by the way, I was tempted to take it (I will do eventually if no-one else does!). Ironhide & I were just laughing because "Yuri" is a subgenre of anime/manga. :shifty: (I hope you didn't take it the wrong way, I was just messing around!)

WANTED

Buddy the Boxer

Overdue bar tab

I hate to do this to old Buddy, but business rates are up again and those goons in "Animal Control" have been cracking down - just the other day Bill got nabbed in the alley out back! The local authorities don't have much sympathy for us hybrids, but I'm hoping some off-world bounty hunter will be less discriminating than these pure-bred Earthers. Just go easy on Buddy, okay? He's had a dog's life. -- Poochie, Poochie's Bar, Helix City

I haven't, but out of interest what's the similarities?

I've read very little spacey sci-fi in general, my reading mostly tends to fantasy and dystopian fiction.
