Landing gear was deployed, and indeed off and redeployed again. Scoop was off (& On at times also but made no difference)

Are there any specific combinations of buttons to press to land? I tried loads.
Or, do you have to face a specific way? The hologram of the ship to the left of the map was lined up over the centre of a mini map thing too but didn't seem to get registered.

Reading online I'm not alone as others seem to have spent 2 hrs trying to land. strawberry float that. I ain't got time to bounce around in the vain hope it confirms I'm on the designated landing platform.

Haven't broken out the flight stick yet (by that I mean I haven't figured a way to use it without withering glances from my wife and comments about wasting money on peripherals again). Handled nicely with the pad (aside from the gazillion button combinations) so with a stick it should be something special.

You have to be facing a particular direction. The little hologram of your ship should be facing away from you so you can see the engines. You have to be dead center as well so the line is blue.

There is an auto landing module you can buy as well, that even plays music for you while it's landing.

It does.

Watch some tutorial vids on the basics: there's a lot to learn and the in-game training missions are strawberry floating awful.

Thanks guys. I thought I'd tried facing different directions but maybe I wasn't perfectly aligned. That's going to be frustrating to nail until I get the auto landing Laga mentioned. Why couldn't they give me that at the start?

I'll give this one more go and if no joy it'll be consigned to the Library and available for redownload (But never will be)

Forget the minimap and all that noise, just look at the landing pad itself. There's always a raised blaster shield (just a sheet of metal coming out diagonally) that the rear of your ship has to face. Easy peasy.

The game gives you nothing which is both good and bad. Although you do get a ship for free which is a pretty good deal.

It's like euro truck simulator in space.

It's VERY very very slow paced, but just flying a ship between space stations can be pretty fun.

Taff got more out of it than most so he's probably best placed to sell it.

Don't go in expecting a space dogfighter or anything though. The combat is pretty bobbins really.

It's going to work in space except you have no boss or job description and you can fire lasers. Also parking infractions are punishable by death.

Elite is:

- The best simulation of actually owning and flying a space-ship ever made
- Beautiful
- Calming
- Blessed with an extremely active and interesting player community
- A near constant grind.

Elite is not:

- Exciting
- Fast
- Simple
- A game, really.

I had a shedload of downtime available to me and I was quite happy to pour it into Elite Dangerous, but this is not an experience for people who desire quick rewards for little work. All in all it took me close to 100 hours to save up enough money for my Anaconda but I'll be damned if that hunk o' junk isn't one of my proudest gaming achievements. Elite is, almost literally, a job you pay to do. It's trade routes and exploration tours, it's constant Alt-Tabbing out of the game to check http://eddb.io or https://coriolis.io/, it's spending 40 minutes on one passenger run and getting blown up by security forces as you forgot to request landing permission. It's the sort of game you put on auto-pilot whilst listening to Dan Carlin podcasts. It's immersive, boring, beautiful and awful all at once. Now if they'd only fix the strawberry floating reputation grind, I might even consider going back to it one day.

Spot on.

Bought this upon release on the XB1 and finally decided to give it a go recently.

Uninstalled an hour later. Not user friendly at all.

Hopefully, the No Mans Sky release on the XB1 will add true coop play and give me my coop play space sim fix (like the old Freelancer days).

Just a heads up that the Horizons pack for this is on sale (Well it was last night) for around £4-£5. Adds the planetary exploration and a load of other stuff into the game (Thargoids as well I believe).

Been delving back into this since I got my X52 and an Oculus Rift at the weekend. VR brings so much more to this game that it's really hard to describe. Especially when so much of the game is out in the expanse of Space. It's when you return to the Platforms and Stations that it really shines. Sliding through the docking hatch, finding your landing pad and then ace-ing the landing feels amazing when you've got that sense of presence VR brings.

Hopefully get some more in over the weekend. Looking to get a nice long session in where I can really go to town on some of the missions.

For those of you that were maybe put off this by the steep learning curve on docking/undocking and planetary/station approaches, help is at hand (from 23rd April)!

Frontier's latest content drop introduces a new Beginner's Zone, where newcomers are free to take flight and familiarise themselves with Elite Dangerous' idiosyncrasies without fear of attack from PvP-frenzied pros. New players will have access to the area - alongside a selection of easy, introductory missions and reduced re-buy costs - until they earn their first Combat, Trade, or Exploration rank.

Additionally, there are two new ship modules available to all players, both designed to assist with some of Elite's trickier flight manoeuvres. The new Advanced Docking Computer, for example, not only automatically lands a player's ship at a station, it'll undock too. Gone will be the days in which you carefully navigate a station's access slot, only to be greeted by a fellow Commander ricocheting dramatically off a nearby wall.

There's also a new Supercruise Assist module which, once activated, will automatically maintain the correct speed and approach required to reach a selected destination, even dropping out of Supercruise at the optimal time - meaning the awkward loops of shame that invariably occur whenever players overshoot their target will likely become a rarer sight. Supercruise Assist will also, apparently, help players remain safely in a planet's orbit.

The Advanced Docking Computer will be fitted as standard on all newly purchased smaller ships post-update, and the Supercruise Assist module is standard on ships of all sizes. And it sounds like both modules should be available from Outfitting too.

I haven't played Elite for quite a while, but I'll definitely check it out once the update hits.

As long as they are the Elite-equivalent of training wheels then they'll be a great addition to help players get the hang of the systems.

Learning to Supercruise is one of the most rewarding aspects of the early game and once you figure it out it the feeling of nailing a perfect drop out at your destination is awesome.

They already had an automatic docking module and it was complete and utter bobbins.

One thing that always annoys me with docking at small stations is that if it's full, rather than the game telling you that it just says "Docking request denied", which could also mean your reputation with the station owners is too low.

Concentrate on getting this as soon as possible and all your worries are over. It's a godsend.
