The Rift is ordered already.

It's online only, but there's a solo mode where you'll not meet any other players, instead running across AI ships. The trade prices are universal and change based on supply and demand from all players, and any of the global events Frontier put on will also be happening in your solo game.

There's some Combat Scenarios they give you to get to grips with flying as a fighter, but most of the game is basically trying to make money in your ship in outer space. Whether that's hauling cargo between star systems, collecting bounties or robbing people is up to you.

Holy gooseberry fool that's big!

I'm not sure even I could manage to hide that from the GF!

Looks like a really nice piece of kit. Does it feel suitable well made/crafted Jiggles?

The gameplay is strange. I've been happy enough up to now just ambling around the star systems, mostly doing delivery runs, but there is a creeping sense of 'and now what..?' the more I do it. Of course, the answer is probably to start getting in some combat action, but my little tin can of a ship wouldn't last five seconds against a well-armed attack ship, so no point. I'm hoping when the full game is released we'll see a lot more options (mining perhaps?).

I actually prefer to play in the proper online mode. I haven't yet been attacked by any other player (that I'm aware of). I like seeing other real players pass by, although they tend to create absolute mayhem at the entry/exit points of spaceports. :fp: Bad driving. You have to be very careful around spaceports.

It sure does. It's a plastic stick, but it has metal in a few places that give it just a great solid feel. The rest on the stick adjusts to your hand size so the pinky trigger is within range, and the hat switches feel great. The throttle clunks in and out of the full and zero positions delightfully, and is completely smooth between, with the option to adjust the tension to need more force to shift it.

My favourite thing though, is purely cosmetic. That little red flap on the stick says SAFE in green when it's down, but when you flip it up, the light turns red as you get access to the FIRE button that deploys your hardpoints. Flipping that up, pressing the button to pull out your guns, then squeezing the trigger just feels so badass.

When did you order yours? And do you know how long you have to wait until it's shipped?

Only on Friday, there. They said it would arrive in September, but it might be October. :(

The beta is just a tiny slice of what the full game will hold, and even then the expansions sound like they'll add a whole lot more too. For one thing the full game will expand the available galaxy from fifty systems to over a billion of them, literally, and there's going to be some real scope for exploration. The economy will get a lot more interesting too, with new resources being discovered and new trade routes popping up all the time. It should make things a lot more dynamic.

On top of all of that the expansions will open up planet surfaces, which are supposed to be full of content, and you'll get the ability to walk around on foot, in your ship, on planets and stations, and even the ability to take other ships by force. Star Citizen is doing some of this stuff as well of course, but Elite: Dangerous is actually coming out before the year 3000. ;)

Saw the link to this vid in the newsletter this week.

Cool as hell. I'm gonna look at playing with Flight Assist off, see how it affects the gameplay with my pad.

In other news I've finally upgraded to an Eagle after getting fed up with my Sidewinder. It has only one Pulse Laser at the moment, but my plan is to upgrade all the weapons and start getting some piracy on the go. :D

It's not too bad. I'm still figuring things out and I've been playing it for a couple of weeks now. But the basics are fairly simple once you've played for a couple of hours.

There are a few viable means of play right now. Trader (Easiest way to make money), Piracy and Bounty Hunter/Mercenary are just three of them.

In unrelated news I've already lost my Eagle and I'm back to that bloody Sidewinder. :fp:

Plan 2.0 is to concentrate on getting a hauler, keep upgrading and pimping it out until I can afford an Anaconda then roam the Galaxy for a bit.

Only played about an hour but so far it seems simple yet complex. All I've done is manoeuvred around a bit and managed to dock at the station you start in front of  Took a while to get to grips with the pad controls, so tempting to get one of those x52s :dread:
Will be dipping in and out to get used to it. No long sessions as I'm guessing progress is wiped on release. But if all goes to plan I should have mastered the controls and know what I'm doing by the time it is released, ready to go.

I'm really tempted by the x52 as well, but I really can't justify the price. Well, not to my girlfriend at least. :fp:

I'm sure they've confirmed that there will be at least one wipe before launch. But it's a few months away I believe.
