After reading this thread and a few other guides, I decided to just go with the training missions initially. First one, no bother at all. 2nd one :dread:

My first attempt resulted in me failing to drop out of supercruise at the right point to satisfy the tutorial. After about a dozen attempts and continual fly-bys I decided to give up and go to bed. Had another go this morning and then realised I'd spent the previous evening targeting the wrong place. :fp: So, I'm there nice and easy and then comes docking. Luckily this thread had pointed out the alternate flight controls so I'm feeling confident. Then I spent 10 minutes bouncing off the dock. Line up the chevrons it's says, so I do. Took me a while to realise/remember that I needed to be pointing away from the entrance. :fp:

Was it fun? Not sure but it wasn't too frustrating as reading this thread had prepared me a bit. What was a significant improvement over OG Elite was the size of the entrance to the space station. That original design decision to make the slot only as big as your ship so you had to match the strawberry floating rotation was a nightmare and also illogical given ships about 5x bigger than the one you flew came out of the same entrance.]

Haven't broken out the flight stick yet (by that I mean I haven't figured a way to use it without withering glances from my wife and comments about wasting money on peripherals again). Handled nicely with the pad (aside from the gazillion button combinations) so with a stick it should be something special.

Glad it hasn't alienated you the way it did me initially. I've got into the groove now, though in truth I still struggle dropping out of FSD at the right time, usually have at least one fly by.

I decided to try venturing to the centre of the galaxy, set off and went 1000LY into a desolate region, having checked the map I couldn't find a single occupied system for at least another 2000LY, realised the time consuming nature of travel wasn't much fun without stations to rest at. Quickly turned around and went back. Had 500-600k in navigation data though when I finally got back! I've decided sight seeing tours with bonus navigation data is the way to go!

Dropping out of FSD at the right time is actually one of the easiest aspects of travelling in this.

Set your target and power on at top speed UNTIL the destination timer hits 7 seconds. When it hits 7 seconds, drop your throttle down so that the horizontal line on your speedo is in line with the bottom of the vertical blue bit of your speedo, like below (only right to the bottom, the below image shows it down halfway)

Once you've done this the ship will basically match the speed of approach automatically and you'll see both the speed of your ship and the distance to the target drop at pretty much the same rate. Once you're within 1,000km you'll get a "safe to disengage" flash up on your HUD, and you then press triangle (on PS4) and you'll drop out of supercruise about 9km away from the target.

It would have been easier if I'd have actually been heading to the right place (I'd targeted Whatever Orbital Platform instead of Whatever City). I think I'll run through the tutorials a couple of times each to nail down the controls.

Couple of PS4 specific questions.
1) Does the game show button prompts once you're in the main game or is it just in the tutorials?
2) How does it work with Rest Mode? Should I always ensure I'm docked somewhere before going into sleep mode?

1 - doesn't show any prompts but if you hold down square, circle, triangle or X it'll show a D-pad on the screen that shows you what happens if you press up, down, left or right whilst holding that particular shape button.

2 - always dock and save your game, just in case the server drops or your internet times out or something.

No problem, happy to help. I'm hardly a veteran or anything but I've gotten the hang of most aspects of the game, at least those that you need to know to get in the groove anyway.

My ASP explorer is kitted out to a value of about 12mil and I have another 5 mil in the bank. Feel like I'm starting to make progress, though it's still slow. Trying to decide whether to mix things up and go for more combat oriented ship or stick with my jack of all trades ASP. Long distance passenger trips with scanning data can earn good money but I'm getting the itch for something a bit more exciting.

This is on the same level as Oblivion for 'ok the game has started, what do I do now?'. The complexity of it is quite staggering, I can spend 15 minutes on the ship kit screen and still be none the wiser. I've no idea what my passenger capacity is and I think I've only got 2 cargo slots. Someone give me an idea of one thing to do right at the beginning?

Data delivery missions - they don't take up any cargo slots and are usually only 1 or 2 system jumps. Nice and straightforward way to ease you into the various aspects of the game - take-off/regular flight/warp-jumping/supercruise/landing.

Then you're doing it wrong. It's absolutely fantastic having all the controls to hand, the mapping (aside from the triangle button) is perfect. It looks like Argos have removed the £38 option now but you can still find occasional ones for £48 depending on stock location, if there is one near you then I'd highly recommend it.

So I've just discovered community goals. A great way to earn cash whilst exploring areas I wouldn't normally. I now have assets totalling about 30mil credits.

Hey everyone,

A quick question for Xbox players. Looking at this as a possible coop game with friends.

Is it possible to play this in a private group (friends only) as a PvE type game.

If so, how does it work? Can you do missions together or complete trading runs together. Are there any limitations here?

TLDR version, a guy wanted to set the record of furthest point away from the galaxy. Got 50 odd hours out on supercruise on a one way trip and set the record. Posted his story up and the community have launched a rescue mission to get him home. First contact should be made on Xmas eve at about 5:30pm gmt apparently.

Can anyone tell me how this game compares to Freelancer? It's one of my favourite games of all time and I'm curious if the story/combat of this is similar.

I've been playing No Man's Sky for the last day as I bought that in the gog sale, but I just feel lost as there is so little direction, is this similar or is there a proper story to this?

The game has its fans (IIRC both Ad7 and Preezy love it!), Rightey, but I believe that one of the drawbacks is that there is zero hand-holding and barely any guidance; it needs some dedication to get into it.

But, hey, I haven't played it so I'll let the experts step in :) .

There isn't really a 'story' to Elite Dangerous at all. There's overarching events in the world as a whole, but there's nothing like an actual plot for an individual player beyond what you make yourself really.

There is zero direction in Elite, and it’s got a relatively steep learning curve compared to the hand holding you get in most games.
