Yeah, I've got it now. Still confused as to what the major changes are, apart from planet landings of course.

Is the crafting something to do with the Engineers? I've tried looking into them and all I can tell it's that they'll open up upgrades for various ship systems if you bring them stuff? I think.

After investing a ton of time in this I'm conflicted. On one hand you have an extremely immersive space sim, the best realised I've ever played. The cockpits are brilliantly presented and the sound design is second to none. Every ship feels different in a way that makes you want to fly each at least once, and it manages to do that thing where, once you find a ship you love, it becomes yours in a way that makes it feel like a loyal NPC companion.

On the other, you have a game with very little content and an incredibly repetitive gameplay loop. Almost 3 years after release there's very little to actually do apart from shuttle missions and kill missions. Even the new content is underwhelming, being variations on the established mission types. The Thargoid stuff has the potential to be interesting, but most of the content is accessible by only the hardest of the hardcore.

Still, I'll be damned if I can get it out of my mind at the moment.

EDIT: Just had a look through the thread. Jesus Christ how much did you guys spend on setups for this game?!

So, decided to have a look at the Engineers as they seemed a pretty big deal. Spent ages getting to one, the explorer, only to find that yes, she had a load more fetch quests for me!

Again, it's like this game is actively trying to put players off sometimes. Everything that, on paper, looks interesting turns out to be fetch quests that take an inordinate amount of time to complete. Even the big community stuff like that megaship that was found turned out to be a 'scan this gooseberry fool, get some info' thing.

This is one of the best space simulations I've ever played, and one of the most content free games I've ever experienced.

Brace yourself, Taf... there's more. The Beyond: Chapter One update is due to arrive on Tuesday for PC and console.

I suspect this could be a reason for some of you space traders to return to the game?

Well I like it.

Very much looking forward to the updates.

Currently going through my prog rock collection.

I've been keeping an eye on Beyond (though thanks for the reminder Jawa!) and I'm not sure it's going to be enough.

Beyond is adding one new ship, some minor updates to missions and trade (you get a choice of rewards for the former now, and can now complete them in multi player wings) as well as improved planet surfaces (which, amazingly, have consistently been downgraded since their debut due to performance concerns). It doesn't add any new gameplay, it doesn't add any new features, it doesn't add any reason for me, personally, to return.

I want some humanity in the game. I want NPCs that aren't just jpg images. I want a decent selection of missions. I want to be able to get out of my chair and walk around the ship I spent so long obtaining.* I want some sort of player interaction that isn't just "oh, I'm getting interdicted again."

I've ploughed over 130 hours into this game and I enjoyed my time with it. The simulation and sound design is amongst the best I've ever experienced. But what's the point when there's literally nothing to do?

*a feature which Frontier have repeatedly said isn't coming, possibly ever.

EDIT: Although gooseberry fool, the new cockpit voice is welcome.

Double edged sword there I think. Spend too much time on it and you see the strings more, but don't spend enough time on it and you never progress enough to get the good ships.

I've probably only actually put maybe 20-30 hours in total and it's enough for me to play once in a while to chill out on a Friday evening with a drink, for me that's the best way to play.

I had a lot of downtime to waste, so yeah I think I probably burnt out on it.

It took so much effort to get my 'Conda that I've never even really tried combat (as the rewards are far too low now) and my intended path (exploration) just seems dull as all hell. The last time I booted it up I looked at my galaxy map, how far I was from the nebula I was aiming for and just closed the game. There's no longer any drive for me to do anything, even the fun stuff like planetary exploration, as there're no tangible rewards.

I'm all for "make your own fun' but when that's central to the game due to dev laziness, I'm out.

EDIT: Ha, watched the Beyond trailer. The visuals centre on Thargoids and Megaships, something that I'd imagine only a tiny fraction of the userbase will ever experience. I certainly haven't.

EDIT 2: It's worth bearing in mind this game has been out for nearly 4 years and has remained, largely, unchanged. The planet landing and Engineers updates are the only ones that have actually added anything to the core gameplay, as far as I can see. How you run a full staff of developers for 4 years with only 2 major updates is beyond (lol) me.

I love the fact that a few years back, after much hoo-ha about adding in more personalities, they added passenger missions...and they were exactly the same as trade missions, only this time your cargo had a name.

I had thought that, given a few years, this might turn into the game I want it to be. After looking at the roadmap they released and the features they're concentrating on I'm almost certain it will never be that game.

For me it's more or less the same game I played thirty years ago and I'm ok with that.

It's something to do whilst listening to music.

Absolutely! I got through the first 3 series of DS9 and the most recent of The Expanse whilst playing. It's definitely my expectations that are at fault here.

Christ this game is not kind to noobs. It took me ages to be figure out how to travel to my very first destination and when I got there and tried to dock, I couldn’t get it to register I was on the landing pad.

How are you supposed to land/dock (PS4)? I had permission but used up my allotted time (twice) even though I was practically stationary on the damn landing pad. Even watching a YT video didn’t help

Frustrated, I’ve deleted this game in a hissy fit. Might reinstall if one of you kind souls can tell me what I’m not doing correctly. TIA

Sounds like you didn't deploy your landing gear. You have to do that manually before you approach the landing pad.
