Most of the things I do in Braid are by accident.

Sure, I usually nail the "theory" of what I'm supposed to do, but putting it into effect usually just descends to trial and error.

I was going to use a walkthrough for two pieces in world one. The bit where:

Really stumped me, but the sense of satisfaction when I got it more than made up for it. I'm currently on World 3 which is really infuriating, but I'll hopefully get my head round it eventually.

I just wish I had a HDTV, as the sprites are a bit too small on mine.

Yeah. I did manage that by accident a couple of weeks ago. Very clever. Basically you must take anything for granted.

Braid PC Release

A lot of people are writing in asking about the release date for the Braid PC version.

I had originally announced the release date for the end of 2008, but for various reasons, this hasn’t happened. Once we slipped into mid-October and all the big Christmas-season blockbusters started coming out, it just seemed like a bad idea to schedule Braid for that time period, as it seems likely it’d get released and then disappear.

At this time, we’re looking at a window of February-March 2009 for the PC release. I know this isn’t good news for those of you who have been waiting a long time for the game, but there sure are lots of games out there for you to play in the meantime.

I am also in talks with someone to do a Mac version (native code). The release date for this would be hopefully not long after the PC version.

There are no plans for other platforms in the near future, though as I’ve mentioned before, a PS3 version a little later on remains a possibility (though again, this depends on whether Sony is interested in the game).

Thanks, and have a good New Year.

I'd like to see Braid get an outing on Wii Ware as well.

I'm not certain, but probably. XBLA file sizes tend to be bloated because of stuff like all the Live functionality they're required to have, which is why arcade games from the 80s somehow end up as 30MB files. With none of that required on Wii, and with the downscale in graphical resolution, I don't see why the game couldn't fit into a reasonable amount of data.

Braid Preorders Now on Impulse!
Published on February 17, 2009 By Island Dog

The much-anticipated PC version of the hit Braid, is now available for preorder on Impulse!

“Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where the player manipulates the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time's strangeness that creates the puzzles. The time behaviors include: the ability to rewind, objects that are immune to being rewound, time that is tied to space, parallel realities, time dilation, and perhaps more. Braid treats your time and attention as precious; there is no filler in this game. Every puzzle shows you something new and interesting about the game world.”

The preorder is available for $19.95, and launch date is set for March 31st. See more at http://www.impulsedriven.com/braid.

Coming to 2 other online distributers as well, Jonathon Blow said this yesterday on his blog:-

I have signed deals with 3 different online distributors right now but I am letting them announce the details since they tend to care a lot about those announcements. So Stardock is the first partner to put out a press release, but there are others.

This has to go on Steam. If it doesn't, there's something seriously wrong.

Internet Whining Leads to Lower Braid PC Price

Following yesterday's unpopular news that Braid PC would cost $5 more than the Xbox 360 version of the game, the creator of the title has now reduced the price to the original $15 figure.

"Yesterday, Stardock announced that they would be selling Braid at the end of March for $19.95," wrote Jonathan Blow on his blog. "This price has proven to be unpopular in certain areas of the Internets, so I've reduced it to $14.95."

"Some people have asked why I picked the $20 price point. The answer is, I just looked at some comparable games on the PC and saw how much they were charging," added Blow, who cited the prices of Crayon Physics Deluxe, World of Goo and Aquaria as examples of comparably-priced indie titles on the PC.

"Ultimately, I would rather have people talking about the game itself, what they like and dislike about it, than about how many American Fiat Currency Dollars it costs," concluded Blow, who noted that two additional distribution platforms for Braid PC will be announced shortly.

Jonathan Blow wrote this on his blog back in summer 2008:
I called Valve 2 years ago. And then again a year later. They were very slow to get back to me and were very unprofessional (and one might say rude) about it. Clearly they were not very interested in the game. They agreed that they might publish it, but said they would sell very few copies.

Since then it hasn’t been a priority for me to try and deal with them; it just hasn’t been worth it yet. At some point, later, maybe — but they haven’t made themselves a publishing partner that I am eager to work with.

He posted this in December:
Oh, and about Steam: Originally they did not seem very interested in Braid, but now that it’s a successful game they seem to have changed their mind. I haven’t signed a contract with them, but they seem interested, so the biggest factor now is just me finishing the PC version and giving it to them.

He then said this just yesterday:
When it comes to a publisher like Steam charging different amounts in Euros vs Dollars, that is something I have no control over. But, at least the game will be available in multiple places, so that if a different online publisher has a foreign-currency policy that you like better, you can get the game from them.

If Valve gives me the choice to offer the game at the equivalent price in Europe as it is in the US, then I absolutely will do that. I’ll tell you that so far, my interactions with Valve don’t lead me to believe they are going to be very flexible on pricing, but maybe this is a separate issue.

If Braid launches on Steam, it will support Achievements.

To me it looks like it probably will come to Steam at some point, but I can see why it hasn't been released there first! :P

BTW, he posted this yesterday too:
I am going to start talking to Sony soon about a PSN version. A lot of people have been asking for that. But of course I can’t promise anything until a deal is signed!

Edit - here's his statement on the pricing change in full:
Braid for the PC is now $15.

Yesterday, Stardock announced that they would be selling Braid at the end of March for $19.95. This price has proven to be unpopular in certain areas of the Internets, so I’ve reduced it to $14.95. Pre-orders from Stardock have not been charged yet, so if you pre-ordered at $20 you will still get the game for $15.

Some people have asked why I picked the $20 price point. The answer is, I just looked at some comparable games on the PC and saw how much they were charging. Crayon Physics Deluxe, World of Goo, and Aquaria, among many others, are all priced at $20. It seemed reasonable not to charge less for Braid than for those games.

But ultimately, I don’t care that much about the PC release price. The XBLA version was nicely profitable, and my goal with the PC release is mainly to get the game out to a wider audience. Sure, it would be nice to earn the optimal amount of money from that release — I have interesting ideas for games that I want to make in the future, and making games is very expensive, and I will probably have to hire people to help! But ultimately, I would rather have people talking about the game itself, what they like and dislike about it, than about how many American Fiat Currency Dollars it costs.

So, you’ll be able to buy Braid for $14.95. Stardock is one of two or three Windows PC-oriented download sites that I have signed with. The others haven’t made their announcements yet, but when they do, I’ll post it here.

Cue a load of PC bitches whining about how $15 is now too high a price, because it's cheaper on XBLA.

Hothead confirms Braid for PS3 News:-

Hothead Games has confirmed that it's working on a PlayStation Network version of Jonathan Blow's rather lovely platform-puzzler Braid.

"I can confirm that Hothead is developing a PSN version of Braid for North America and Europe, with no launch timeframe currently available," a spokesperson told Eurogamer in answer to inquiries, following a USK rating leak.

I loved this game. Evil difficulty in parts but it made it fun.

It's about an Alchy as far as I can gather.
