What the strawberry floating strawberry float is up with Braid's stars? They've actually ruined the challenge of an otherwise perfectly tuned game.

ARGH.

strawberry floating pieces of gooseberry fool.

And to think I restarted my game three jigsaw pieces before the end just so I could get the house star.

Indeed. Arguably there's not a lot of content, but what's there is so brilliantly honed that for the relatively modest cost, you can't help but love it. Even laying aside the nebulous narrative which could mean so many things, the time "stuff" (by which I refer to the time reversal and the stage exclusive gimmicks) are executed and integrated so well that they bring fresh vitality to a genre which is - in many ways* - the very foundation of the industry as we know it.

*OK, Pong predates it, but arguably it was Donkey Kong that first managed to wedge a real narrative in there.

Yes, a PC release is coming up (my current estimate is in October, but if I get it done sooner then that, great).

David Hellman has put together a very nice collection of Braid graphics called the Braid Graphics Briefcase. This collection contains a bunch of icons you can use as forum avatars, or program launch icons, or … anything! It’s also got some screenshots and a giant desktop wallpaper. And more.

Here is a small taste of what’s available on that page:

This complete set includes all of the Xbox 360 Gamer Pics that shipped with the Xbox Live Arcade release of Braid, and many images that were not included in those. (For fans of the dinosaur, he’s included this time.)

I'm curious as to why it's taken so long for a PC version to emerge. Some kind of MS exclusivity clause or just conversion grunt-work?

Because I was led to believe that even with less sales, the PC versions of these kinds of things usually wind up more lucrative without a middleman, but I don't know too many people who would buy Braid again for PC.

Stay stuck.

Seriously, you'll get them eventually. Braid's not one to rush through looking for a walkthrough. There's probably not going to be another game like it for years.

Listen to him, I wouldn't have gone to a walkthrough. If you keep watching things it will come to you. Also remeber that every world is different and think about the abilities of that world.

I agree with your sentiment, I mostly like to play games without help. But I keep going through the whole thing being stuck, and then hearing people like Rubix78 and other people saying its easy! It's like my brain can almost solve the puzzles, its reaching out, almost touching the solutions... but it gets a little bit much and I have to stop to give it a rest.

I wouldn't read a walkthrough. The game is only sixty puzzle pieces long and then that's it, so it's probably best you get to savour each one.

I was going to use a walkthrough for two pieces in world one. The bit where:

You move the jigsaw pieces to create a platform

Really stumped me, but the sense of satisfaction when I got it more than made up for it. I'm currently on World 3 which is really infuriating, but I'll hopefully get my head round it eventually.

I just wish I had a HDTV, as the sprites are a bit too small on mine.

Most of the things I do in Braid are by accident.

Sure, I usually nail the "theory" of what I'm supposed to do, but putting it into effect usually just descends to trial and error.

Yeah. I did manage that by accident a couple of weeks ago. Very clever. Basically you must take anything for granted.

Braid PC Release

A lot of people are writing in asking about the release date for the Braid PC version.

I had originally announced the release date for the end of 2008, but for various reasons, this hasn’t happened. Once we slipped into mid-October and all the big Christmas-season blockbusters started coming out, it just seemed like a bad idea to schedule Braid for that time period, as it seems likely it’d get released and then disappear.

At this time, we’re looking at a window of February-March 2009 for the PC release. I know this isn’t good news for those of you who have been waiting a long time for the game, but there sure are lots of games out there for you to play in the meantime.

I am also in talks with someone to do a Mac version (native code). The release date for this would be hopefully not long after the PC version.

There are no plans for other platforms in the near future, though as I’ve mentioned before, a PS3 version a little later on remains a possibility (though again, this depends on whether Sony is interested in the game).

Thanks, and have a good New Year.
