Some background:
Bravely Default was a 3DS JRPG released in 2013. In a way it was a throwback to a prior era of JRPGs (and certainly of Final Fantasies), with a party of four, random turn-based battles, and a job system. Where it differentiated itself was how it integrated those aspects.

Your party of four might not have been the most original stereotypes (shonen hero, wet blanket love interest, skirt-chaser, tomboy); but they had enough dialogue and pretty good voice-acting to bring them to life. The battle system allowed you to save up turns by defending (‘default’) and then spend them all at once (‘brave’), making the battles feel more dynamic. The jobs had an effective mix-and-match mechanic whereby you could carry over both passive and active spells from various jobs, making trying new ones out rewarding.

So far, so Octopath. The game-changers were the absolutely bananas amazing soundtrack, the story twists, and the ability to change battle frequency on the fly. That last bit made me more excited than I should have been. The game-dropper was that the entire last half of the game, where the plot picked up, was repetitive and dull beyond measure.

This game existing at all is a bit odd because we had a direct sequel, Bravely Second. It solved the pacing issue while keeping most good things about Bravely Default, and in an instant became one of my top 25 games ever. I wrote about it here. Sadly they did get a new group in to do the soundtrack, with mixed results.

So anyway: here we are. New Bravely game, completely new set of characters, but with the old composers back which is chuffing amazing news. :D They did a live concert in Japan for the original, which was brilliant. (Opt for 23-25 if you want a taster of why this is so exciting.) The characters look like anime figurines brought to life, and the towns look still hand-painted.

It’s obviously still some way off, but hey - at least we got some good news last night.

Was hoping we'd get the 3DS games remastered since I never got round to playing them. A sin I need to fix.

Loved the original two back on the 3DS and glad we're getting another, thought for a minute it was an Octopatch sequel.

Was a real big fan of the first half of the first game, but the ending knocked it down a few pegs. Octopath was fantastic, but wish the stories wove together a little more.

Didn't get that far through Second due to the time it dropped, but I'll probably get back to that at some point.

I really like how this studio does traditional turn based combat.

I'll definitely be getting this. I loved the first 2 games, I even got the special edition for Bravely second (the art book is gorgeous!). I have the demo on switch for this already but I haven't touched it yet.

I’ve... not heard good things about the demo. actually. I still have faith that the game will be good, however.

Think this may the wrong game, Rubix! I’m guessing you’re referring to Bravely Second. And... no I don’t, sorry. Much though I loved Chompcraft it’s been a while since I played Second.

Along with the stuff I mentioned in the OP, it’s random stuff like Chompcraft and Fort Lune that helped put Bravely Second into my Top Tier of games. Hoping for more of the same with BD2.

Nice chunky bump for this which came out on Friday. It feels very similar to the original(s) but shinied up, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your tastes. It never really pretended to be anything else, mind (unlike Dragon Quest XI which I always thought had pretentions of something higher that its gameplay couldn’t live up to), and I’m having fun with it. I think I’ve got seven or eight jobs, including one from a side quest, and including an utter bastard of a boss.

Anyone else picked this up, or thought about doing so? The middling Metascore is I think a reflection of how its recipe is unchanged rather than because it’s a weak game, but I could be wrong.

I’ve not bought this yet, played the other two but although ive enjoyed the battle i never liked the difficulty spike at bosses

Picked it up and just complete the first boss and it's more of the same really. Wasn't keen on the character art style at first but warming to it now, but dam the music is so good here.

I wanna play more Persona Strikers first, before jumping back to this.

All valid.

I’ve only found the one properly spiky boss so far... Not ashamed to say that I looked up a cheap strategy for them.

Good question and one I’ve puzzled over myself! The actress says on her Twitter bio that she’s London/California-based, but I’m pretty sure she’s not doing a British or American accent. So... ‘European’ I guess. (Funnily enough the American-sounding Seth/MC has a British/Cambodian actor.)

It’s odd: normally I’d go for subs in JRPGs (Tales of Vesperia for example), but in Bravely 2 subs just felt right.
