I realise this is a stupid side issue, but why would you want fish and chips in old newspaper? Apart from the Daily Mail, which uses a surprisingly high quality print process, the ink and dirt regularly comes off on your hands. All that gunk on your food? YUM! Mix it with vinegar and it'll come right off the paper.

Some premium fish and chip shops do wrap it in a fake newspaper if you're that bothered.

According to the lady in the clip it made the fish and chips delicious.

I’d imagine the truth is s combination of rose tinted specs and a change in the oil used to cook it.

Oh and it wasn’t the EU that banned newspaper fish and chips, that was a UK government law.

Yes but if Wetherspoon’s man can buy things from outside the EU right now, then that’s a good reason to leave so that he can buy things from outside the EU.

I have been told there is a Wetherspoon’s in-house magazine that has a lot about Brexit, but I am yet to see a copy of it myself. Then again I don't really frequent 'spoons very often. I would like to know what it's telling the patrons.

I was going through a loyalist area in Belfast last night and they had a big anti EU message on one of their murals.

I guess they want a reunification vote after all :simper: :simper: :simper:

At the Foreign Office he was heard to muse as to whether Chancellor Angela Merkel had served in East Germany’s Stasi secret police. French president Emmanuel Macron was a “jumped-up Napoleon”. As for Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, “Why isn’t he called Murphy like all the rest of them”.

Our new Prime Minister there making friends with our neighbours.

Brussels is preparing to offer Boris Johnson a no-deal Brexit extension beyond 31 October in an attempt to help him keep the Conservative party together and provide one more chance to strike an agreement deal.

The extra period of EU membership would be used for renegotiation but could be billed to Conservative Brexiters as an opportunity to prepare further for leaving without a deal.

“It will be described as a technical delay to save Boris from political embarrassment but then we will have time to find an agreement,” said one senior EU diplomat.

There is growing confidence among key member states that a no-deal Brexit can be avoided after the Commons voted this week to preventthe next prime minister, likely to be Johnson, from proroguing parliament.

The details of the approach shared with the Guardian will aggravate hard Brexiters in Westminster who will see it as a serious threat to their expectations that the UK should depart on 31 October at any cost.

Under the proposal discussed in Brussels, Johnson could maintain that he is on course to leave without an agreement while keeping open the option of coming to a deal with the bloc.

EU leaders are also considering the steps they would take to avoid a crisis in the event that Johnson does press ahead with no deal on 31 October. A declaration has been mooted expressing the EU27’s regret at the lack of a deal and offering to re-engage if the UK accepts its financial commitments.

“How do we build back out of the abyss in a time where minds on both sides of the channel are probably not very consolatory?” a second diplomat said. “We need to preempt that moment and create a platform for reengagement on the day the UK leaves which might be used once the dust has settled. Provided of course the existing obligations are settled.”

We’ve known this gooseberry fool for at least a year or two now. How has Johnson not realised it?

He has been able to avoid it and ignore it, as PM he won’t be able to do that, and everything that happens is flat out on him and he can’t deflect it.

You can’t lie convincingly to others without lying to yourself.

If he has spent this time avoiding “officials” telling him directly he can pass it all off as media hysteria.

Don’t get me wrong he is a strawberry floating moron, but I can see how he will have squared it in his head to be able to keep on his “everything will be fine” path.

I'll put money on the government trying to start street parties and like to get the British sprit back. Like the jubille and royal wedding it'll be a time for controlled fun. Bit of bunting and TV shows about making what you have go further. I think they'll make leave day a bank holiday and try to get it to become a thing.

A ton of of government messages and adverts about how you should support the UK by buying British and not going abroad on holiday. People being shouted out at checkouts when a racist spots a tin of Pineapple in your basket.

Wish my image sig would work

And that will be the less disgusting stuff, there will be more shifts right with gradually bringing in divisions between Other and British people to nudge towards a state of racisms acceptance to float the idea of “sending more home” to ease load on our services, how we need to reserve what we have for “our own”.

There is great potential for this to become a very scary and frankly disgusting time.

I think EU officials are probably formulating 'new language' that can used to get a deal with Johnson. The man is a coward and everyone knows this so it seems prudent to prepare for enabling his climbdown with a few token clarification that allow him to save face. It is possible that a deal might be more possible under this scenario as if Johnson tries another vote on then Brexit supporters in his party are more likely to support it, partly because they will realise that having another leader makes no difference and partly because many will be desperate for an excuse to climbdown. If the EU can engineer such an excuse, no matter how flimsy, I think there is a good chance that the party will go with it and vote things through at the eleventh hour.

I ultimately don't think Johnson has the balls to go through with no deal when push comes to shove. If he does then he is either much braver than I have ever given him credit for or far less intelligent and savvy than I supposed.
