Why did Corbyn call this vote? What was he expecting?

He had little option really...even though he knew it wouldn’t succeed there was no way he couldn’t call for a no confidence vote after last nights crushing defeat. It’s widely expected that this will be the first of many no confidence votes and the problem for May is that once a new deal/pathway develops she will either lose the DUP or some Tory MP’s will decide it’s a good time to cut their loses. The bonkers thing is that as May would be cut lose the Tories would probably be re-elected with an overall majority as well.

I doubt it's going to be the first of many votes, the SNP and Lib Dems have both said they won't support further No Confidence votes so soon.

Yesterday’s vote has shown that this government has the overwhelming support of parliament to carry out the will of the people.

Lammy and Starmer are great (Starmer is somewhat tainted by abstaining on the welfare bill in 2015, Lammy came fourth in the race for the London mayor candidacy) but I don't believe either would have broken the 40% vote share Corbyn got in 2017 against the worst incumbent political campaign in my lifetime. We may be long past 'peak Corbyn' and he's never really been a very good opposition leader as the fence sitting has done him obvious political damage, but I don't really think there's a viable alternative right now.

It feels a shame that it was Corbyn who was the left wing candidate of 2015. It's like there should have been a better candidate, but I certainly can't name who that person would have been and should be now.

There isn't a perfect candidate and I think that's something everyone needs to accept.

EDIT - I might be happier with Lammy or Starmer as leader but I don't think it gets Labour closer to power.

Can’t help but feel Corbyn has played a smart one. He must have known that some form of cross party consensus sounding would be made by May sooner or later and him now setting his own red line of guaranteeing a No Deal before entering talks really puts her over a barrel. He must know she cannot state this as leaving regardless of deal is on the statute.

EU ready to delay withdrawal until next year

European Union officials are examining plans to delay Brexit until 2020 after Germany and France indicated their willingness to extend withdrawal negotiations because of Britain’s political turmoil.

Diplomats and officials are preparing a longer than envisaged extension of the EU’s Article 50 exit procedure because the extent of Theresa May’s defeat in the House of Commons last night.

Previous planning had centred on a three-month delay to Brexit from March 29 until the end of June but now, according to multiple sources, EU officials are investigating legal routes to postpone Britain’s withdrawal until next year.
