It's the first step in a multi step program to dethrone May if she doesn't start giving way to a solution. As soon as No Deal comes off the table (widely expected) then her options will quickly diminish. Will the ERG keep voting on party lines if keeping May ensures a referendum?

He had little option really...even though he knew it wouldn’t succeed there was no way he couldn’t call for a no confidence vote after last nights crushing defeat. It’s widely expected that this will be the first of many no confidence votes and the problem for May is that once a new deal/pathway develops she will either lose the DUP or some Tory MP’s will decide it’s a good time to cut their loses. The bonkers thing is that as May would be cut lose the Tories would probably be re-elected with an overall majority as well.
I think if labour had a more center left leader they might have been able to swing a few Tories to vote against May. They'll never vote for Corbyn though.
Tom Watson's closing speech was excellent, summed up the situation perfectly. In stark contrast to Gove who just repeated the same old Corbyn lies and smears.

Which sitting Labour MP do you want as leader of the party?

I see it the other way. If Labour had somebody like Dan Jarvis at the helm the tories would be running scared. I do think some tories will inevitably vote against the Government in a no confidence vote as it will oust May and they know full well that Corbyn would never command a majority from the electorate. It’s mad to see how what’s probably the most pressing and historic political business for a generation is being presided over by the most insipid and toothless political elite from all sides for a generation.

David Lammy
He's not much closer to the centre, is he?
I think Keir Starmer has to be in the running in the future.
