Why didn't anybody warn us?

You Remainers didn't make the case well enough so it's all your fault.

Can't tell if serious.

But yeah, Remainers had the disadvantage of being honest. It's piss easy to win things when you just lie and ignore reality. Succeeding after winning is a different story though.

That's what leavers have started saying to me.

Reminder that if the referendum had been legally binding, the courts would have voided the result due to the illegal campaigning by Leave.

Going by the rampant corruption in many facets of the government these days I'm sure they would have found a way to make that problem go away. Hell, they probably would have just gone they way they did and just claim "will of the people" and deciding not to listen to "experts" and to just "get Brexit done". Then when called out on it would have declared they only broke they law in a "specific and limited way". By the time a campaign had worked it's way through the legal system to challenge the illegal progress there would be many cries of "just getting this done so we can move forward" from the usual places in the media.

God, I have no trust in the country it seems.

I wonder how long it will before the media realise they can't put off reporting on this disaster any more. At the moment they are able to fill airtime with vaccine euphoria and scrambling to give space to right-wing nut jobs who want to throw everything open immediately. Sooner or later the pandemic will start to fade away (expect numbers to go down to pretty much nothing by Summer) and what will be left is just a dire economic situation and thousands of business floundering. Then you have the new restrictions about about by the end of the grace period in April and it seems hard to see how anyone could report on anything else.

I remember back last year at news years someone said something along the lines "at least we don't have to hear about Brexit all the time now" and I laughed across the Zoom link at him, although I don't think he realised what I thought was so funny. Brexit is now the defining point of our age. I'm going to be old man before people stop talking about bloody Brexit.

It’s fine, they can just report it all as the EUs resistance that’s causing the problem.

I assume she's refusing questions because Brexit is going so well and there's nothing to say.

The Sun were trying to pass off Covid deaths as wrong reporting the other day to make the government sound better than the idiots they are so anything is possible.

The turning point will be when Brexiters realise that a % of the issues we're facing are down to the Brexit that was chosen as opposed to Brexit on the whole. At the moment, any criticism of the current situation is defended to the hilt because those people see it as an attack on their decision at the referendum even though a huge number of those voting leave would not have chosen this Brexit if asked at that point.

Right now the talk seems to be about the 'EU creating barriers to trade'. The mental gymnastics required to ascribe the decision of the UK government to move to third-country status to a problem for the EU are quite impressive.

It’s quite simply, we too, ourselves out of the club, now we would like some of the benefits and the EU say we can only have them if xyz happens. Therefore the EU are preventing it from happening. All you have to do is ignore the first part then it’s easy to see how it’s the EUs fault.

I think that’s how it works anyway.

Talking to Brexiteers about this is just annoying, they just seem to think that you should just be allowed to put stuff in a truck and drive it to where ever and sell it without any barriers and would accept any arguments against it.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

That's only half true.

They think the UK should be able to do that but think everyone else should follow rules.

British (more accurately English) exceptionalism.

Well that and they just sort of slip through arguments even if the new argument contradicts the last argument they used, although they get really angry if you point out the contradiction.

The previous arrangements were so successful at eliminating barriers, making them invisible to ordinary people, that a lot of people just assumed that was normal and not the result of complex negotiations and agreements behind the scenes. Because they could not actually see any of this happening they assumed it was unimportant despite the pleading of experts. Classic case of 'I can't see it, so it doesn't exist' logic.

Boris Johnson has drafted former Brexit negotiator Lord David Frost into his cabinet to take charge of forging a new relationship with the EU.

I mean he was so successful last time, what could possibly go wrong.

Ouch. There's a solo RPG book I really want to order but it's only available overseas so I've had to leave it for this exact reason.

Brexit :toot:
