iPhone have had different models before to cater for the American cell towers.

Changing a socket type isn't a major cost change, especially compared to accessory mark-up. It will be soldered to the same place on the board, no moulds etc have to made made to cater for the change.

If more countries adopt USB only (such as English speaking America) then maybe it will become less cost effective to sell two models.

Yeah I bet they'll do something like that. They won't want to lose any money and so will just flog some USB adapters to make even more money.

Hopefully the EU law means that isn't possible.

EU law means they can't use a dongle as work around so that's not going be possible as you say.

Yeah I just checked, the law says it has to have the USB port.

Hopefully Apple and other companies standardise worldwide. But I bet they won't.

Apple absolutely aren't going to split their manufacturing in half to produce USB-C for Europe only and stay Lightning for the rest of the world. That would be a massive increase in their production costs that would outweigh any potential profit.

They'll do one of two things,

1) Go USB-C globally
2) Remove the charge port altogether and go completely wireless

They will need a port for support etc for flashing stuff I would imagine, but I could image it being a lightning thats hidden under a panel that only support can get to for flashing the device or whatever and then all charging will be mag safe.

You should see the Apple forums full of "How dare a foreign power tell an American company what they can and cannot do!" reactions. Never mind that Apple are a global company or that Lightning still uses USB 2.0 transfer rates

Apple will relent on this one. They're greedy/clever enough to find a way to make Magsafe better than USB-C and will just market that whilst providing a USB-C port. The iPads have already gone this way and the iPhone was always next.

Having looked it up they actually have two different SKUs for the US market as some phones over there don't use SIM cards. They also have different versions to deal with LTE bands differences in Europe and the US. So maybe they will keep the UK lighting although it really depends on the cost vs extra revenue. Do they really make that much off of lighting connector sales?

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Just making it up as they go along, absolutely embarassing. The fact hes got that squirrel faced chirpy expression on his face the whole way through makes it even more infuriating.

It's okay. We've become real good friends with Ukraine. We can trade with them.
