A farmer who voted to leave the European Union insisted she did not vote for Brexit as it turned out, saying she voted “for people to be more patriotic”.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, the farmer was asked by a member of the public why she was complaining about “predicted outcomes” of Brexit when she “gleefully welcomed Brexit” – and if she regretted her vote.

She replied: “I think that this is something that came to light on Friday, that people might troll people on social media which is really unfair.

“Yes, I did vote for Brexit, but I can assure everybody that is listening that I did not vote for this. I voted for people to be more patriotic.

I voted for the government to look after ourselves, to put border controls in, there’s a number of things that I voted, I went to a number of meetings, nearly one a week, I was very educated in my vote and I respect other people’s vote and they should respect my vote.”

This is essentially the issue.

People didn't vote for anything specific or tangible. They voted for an undefinable concept and that's how we've ended up in this mess.

It's also infuriating that they aren't taking responsibility by saying "this isn't what I voted for" when everything that is happening was spelt out by the remain side and dismissed.

I disagree. I think a hell of a lot of them voted in the belief it would reduce immigration, so they wouldn't have to hear foreign accents or see quite as many non-white people on the high street. Intangible outcomes like 'extra patriotism' etc are just euphemisms.

2016-2020: "That's just Project Fear!"

2021: "I didn't vote for this! Why did nobody warn us?"

They won, maybe they should just accept it.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

It's deliberate because he's a scruffy twat, I think people give him way to much credit for "playing the buffon" when a large portion of it is just that he genuinely is a buffoon!

His team will absolutely take every opportunity to push the angle harder, but he gives them a hell of a lot to work with without needing it to be coordinated!

Weird how the right wing loved it when Cameron told Corbyn to "put on a proper suit", but they also love a scruffy twat like Johnson.

I've heard bits of that before, but it's astonishing to read the whole thing.

Looking at admirers of Johnson is like looking at followers of a cult. I just don't understand the appeal, but I can see just how devoted they are. Same as Trump in the US.

strawberry float knows how we deprogram an entire country.

It feels like he's the manifestation of the del boy falls through the bar sketch. He knows what a certain audience wants, and just gives them that every time and to hell with anything else.

Complete bunch of strawberry floating banana splits who've ruined the UK in a way that'll take 50 years to reverse.
