The weird thing is I actually think that the current left wing out look is more individualist than the right wing. The only way Brexit makes sense to me as a move to protect the English identity, it's what the sovereignty thing actual boils down to. It's about some vague notation of England (and I do mean England) as an identity and trying to protect it. Everything must be scarified to keep the state pure and unaffected by European or outside influences. It's not about giving people the choice to act in whatever way they like, it's an attempt to do the opposite and force everybody to adopt a narrow identity.

I think you're over thinking it a little, it's mostly about Tories not liking being told what to do by jumped up foreigners. And then their quest to demonise aforementioned foreign types so that the masses vote for their ridiculous ideas.

I don't think I am, it plays into Mogg wanting to send the flag from HMS victory to France. They are totally wedding to the idea of Englishness.

Dragging this into the Brexit thread where it belongs, but I suspect it is all about a small number of people making even more exhorbitant amounts of money at the expense of everyone else, and stunts like this are them LARPing as the good old British Empire and how to sell it to the idiots and racists who they got to vote against their own self interests.

That's certainly part of it, also probably a bit to do with Russia trying to damage the UK and EU, but I think it's a good reason why people went along with the whole thing. I do think a lot of the ERG people also fit broadly into the same category. They're not just LARPing at some level they do actually buy into what they are selling, even if Mogg et al stand to make a lot of money out of this stuff.
