How does this help us!

That's a lie also but we're used to it at this stage.

Also, even with a no deal Brexit, Ireland's Economy is still expected to grow, just not as fast as it would have with a deal. Northern Ireland is slipping into a recession right now too which makes things even more stark.

They went in on the jazz thing because jazz is connotative of black people, so to a certain kind of hardcore racist it will vaguely suggest that he is "anti-white". It will also be considered by racist boomers to be a somewhat "elite" thing to be into (i.e. music that isn't pop/rock from when boomers were young).

This has been done almost word-for-word before. In Nazi Germany, jazz was referred to as "Negermusik": a conspiracy of the "Jewish elites" to replace the music of "white German culture" with the "degenerate" music of black people. To suggest someone was into jazz would be to suggest that they were a participant in that conspiracy, and people were arrested and even sent to camps on that basis. That's the rhetorical tradition the Mail is drawing from.

How many Mail readers are likely to know about any of that though?

A certain kind of Mail reader will definitely think of jazz as "black people music" and/or "music that elitist liberals listen to"; the (so-called) journalists who work for the Mail are certainly well-educated enough to understand that - and know the history behind the suppression of jazz - and they will have included it as a deliberate dog-whistle.

Mail readers of course will themselves be ignorant of the history of "Negermusik". Even if you tried to explain it to them it wouldn't change any of their stupid prejudices or awful views, or convince them the Mail is in any way bad. They would say out loud "You're so oversensitive, you sound crazy" while thinking inside "Good, Hitler did nothing wrong".

I mean it's not exactly a feat of translating to figure out where the term "Negermusik" came from, is it?

Yeah. What's sad though is you can lay out the history of how the Nazis combined racism and conspiracy theories to create enemies and build up a narrative that white German culture was under attack, and how a close parallel to this is happening again now, and it just won't make an impact on these people. They don't care. Mail readers might accuse you of being rude as a surface level deflection but deep down they're actually OK with being disgusting racist fascists.

Is there anything more depressing than the Trending panel on Twitter these days? This morning it's an unholy brew of Katie Hopkins and #leavealliance. I think I need to give it up.

I recently uninstalled the twitter app from my phone, so I can no longer instinctively open up the cesspit when I'm idly killing time on my phone, and I feel much better for it. Now I only visit if I actively want to post something, and don't check the trending stuff at all.

Twitter is fine as long as you don't follow the evil bastards and block/mute the ones who could pop up on your feed.

Twitter as a company should do far more though to remove the racists from its platform, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Talking of social media, the company I work for uses that Yammer internal social network thing, and it sends updates on "popular conversations" to your inbox every now and again. Yesterday's highlight was a lengthy comment section argument over someone posting a link to the leaked yellowhammer documents.

"it's just a worst case scenario, it doesn't mean it's going to happen"

"stop scaremongering"

"it's just like the millennium bug all over again"

:dread:

Blair is such a genius that he managed to hide the existence of the Supreme Court until the very moment that it strikes against our Boris. :x

Latest YouGov polling:

YouGov wrote:38% of Leave voters think senior judges are generally biased

Rough Justice: Conservative Minister Kwasi Kwarteng has been criticised after suggesting that “many people” believe judges are biased about Brexit.

Do Brits generally think senior judges in the UK are biased or fair?

43% think they are generally fair

While 26% think they are generally biased

Those who voted Leave (38%) are twice as likely as those who voted Remain (16%) to say senior judges are generally biased.

Admittedly I had to look up what happened before the court was setup in 2009 and it would have been done by judges in the house of lords. I don't really see how that would have been much better for the Express?

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.
