Had a quick first go on this at midnight last night when my Xbox copy unlocked. Great fun so far having done the first few career races.

Seems a bit buggy in places. Nothing game breaking but noticed weird sorta graphic artifacts on some menus and loading screens and the Dolby Atmos sound cuts out now and then.

Shame it's no enhanced at all for the X either, there's a few jaggies here and there - I think 4K or extra anti aliasing on the X would've been a nice addition. HDR too would've been nice. Regardless though it's a really fun game, can't wait to play more today.

Is the in-car view any good?

I'm not a fan of the demolition derbies in the career mode, fortunately there is some leeway in terms of the points needed to unlock stuff.

The in car view is fine, but with no mirrors it can be hard to block other drivers coming up on you until it's too late.

Finding it quite buggy too. Had a few times the track hadn't loaded in so just had to drive into a grey void at which point it all loaded. Infrequent but there's lots of little graphical glitches at the mo, feels like it could've used a bit longer before release. Hopefully a patch soon will fix it.

Great fun though, would highly recommend it despite the above. The destruction Derby events are a bit hit and miss especially the weirder ones like lawn mowers but you can normally get through them after a few goes though there does seem an element of luck.

The randomness and the ai makes racing fun though. Had a few times where I've been in the lead and a random cars just flown across the track in front of me and nearly papped myself.

Eurogamer has assigned a "Recommended" assessment to the console release... but it's an odd review. They've re-published their review of the PC version from last year and just placed a new paragraph above it.

Wreckfest is, quite simply, the best Flatout game to date. We thought as much last year when it released on PC, and having spent a while with the console versions that opinion hasn't changed a bit - if anything, it's lovely to have Bugbear's brilliance back on console where it belongs. This review is from the PC version last year, and very much still applies to this week's console release - though be warned that load times are excruciatingly long on Xbox One and PS4, and even playing on an Xbox One X you're going to be falling well short of 60fps. They're small, noticeable problems that are a shame, but don't detract from the greatness on offer here.

It makes me wonder just how much time they've spent with the console version. Flaws have been highlighted but determined as being "small"... I dunno, it seems positive but the review feels a bit slapdash; perhaps more so as I believe the PC version has received several updates since it launched.

First impressions are it’s a solid 8/10 for me.

If they sort out a few rough edges and add some more customisation options (custom playlists/MP games is absolutely needed and a track editor would be amazing) then it could elevate it to a 9 or 10/10 for me.

Thoroughly enjoying it so far.
