Lol off course it does. I'm just getting another ceiling under the existing one for soundproofing. So they basically erect a wooden frame to the wall all around the room and then insert like 6inches of sound proofing material into the gap consisting of various different layers like rock wool, acoustic boards, metal clips that dampen vibrations etc

because of a wardrobe?

The wardrobe has stopped after I complained to her. It's just the general sounds like foot steps, sounds of drawers slamming close, things dropping on the floor, voices, tv noise etc
It is a very badly insulated property.
Anyway turns out building control want £400 in fees to allow me to do it as it's classed as an "internal alteration" to which i argue it is not and the freeholder want £250 for a license which adds a total of £650. Ridiculous.

All that fuss over some footsteps.

It'd be easier to just move to a house.

do you expect this stuff to be attached to the ceiling with no damage to the underlying structure? thats what you are paying for, they are gonna have to fix that gooseberry fool when you move

It's attached to the wall. As it's an independent ceiling. So any vibrations from the existing ceiling shall not transfer onto the new ceiling otherwise it wouldn't work that well.

It's actually nice to see you lol at it. Makes me think that this isn't the end of the world. But it's stressing me out like mad.
i might just install it without consent and if they want they can get retrospective consent afterwards sometime in the future.
I mean I've already done the windows and now I cannot hear a single person or car go past outside it's heavenly!

Why not just tape some of that soundproof foam to the existing ceiling instead of having to piss about? Or better yet, move? Sounds like you have the money to do it if you've got £650 for a new ceiling!

I get the impression N1FFF won't be happy with the end result either in terms of how unsightly/cramped it makes the bedroom feel by taking half a foot away and also by it probably not working very well at cancelling out the sound.

Wouldn't be surprised if the room felt extra hot and stuffy during the hottest days of the year too.

It's money that I don't want to spend tbh.
That £650 is just building control and freeholder consent fees.
The ceiling itself is £1560 Inc VAT which thank god is 5% not 20%.

I don't think taping something onto the ceiling will work? It would prevent some of my noise reaching to the flat upstairs but not noise coming down to my room I don't think.

No different that securing a fitting wardrobe or large paintings to the wall right? Just holes.

Apparently it works very well based on reviews I read on check a trade. https://www.soundproofingrus.com/?gclid ... 7gQAvD_BwE

The secondary glazing which I got has been phenomenal. There are markets outside my flat at the weekend with loud music playing and when they are closed you cannot hear anything. Tbh it was a gamble at first as they may not have worked and could have been just clever PR.

What are you going to do in the summer months when your flat is roasting hot and you need all the windows open? Air conditioning?

That's a good point. With 6inches of ceiling gone there will be less room for hot air to settle. I have a really good fan and I can open my bedroom door to let the heat escape.

It's a joint ownership between myself and my sister but she doesn't live there. So I have a flatmate.
So yeah I'm the leaseholder of which the lease is something like 120years.

Have you consulted your sister over not getting approval?
