Buying a house (and renting)

Just asked our landlord if we can get a deck built. Wonder if he'd like to contribute to the cost....

Doubt it, and your rent will go up as he house now has a deck so is worth more.

I'd rip the strawberry floater out just to spite him. Already paying £700 a month!

Out of curiosity; why are you wanting to spend your own money to improve someone else's property?

We both work from home now, It'd just be nice. Small investment for a nice relaxing spot to clear our heads. Have friends round and all that too

I totally understand wanting to improve your surroundings and make nicer the place you are living! I guess I really meant to ask, is there any chance you could save that money for when you buy a place of your own?

England is the country where landlords are celebrated and tenants are demonised. Unless there is a specific agreement in place a landlord can up your rent to any amount for any reason. Rents are now (well, have been for some years) more expensive than mortgages.

I wonder what percentage of first time buyers in the UK get their deposit or at least part of it from Mummy and Daddy?

I know people who have had it like an inheritance up front. A sort of, well, you can have this money now but you obviously won't get it when we die. Another friend had his parents go in as like investors, with the understanding that their share would be repaid and larger when the house was sold in the future.

Most I would imagine. And a lot of those that say they did it themselves are lying.

And here I am saving like a loser. I should have just had wealthier parents.

But saying that, I was planning on buying at the end of this year. Obviously my intended time line is going to have to be a bit flexible with how the world is right now, but I'm trying to plan and budget as much as possible.

Those of you that have bought, where did you find it advertised? I was previously mostly checking Rightmove due to the convenience.

Also, how much work did you do on it when you moved in? Bit of decorating, or something more substantial?

We used Rightmove predominately. I tried a few others but from my experience, everything was on Rightmove.

Your second question really depends on the type of property you buy. Ours needed a fair bit of work, including decorating all over, but the previous owners had done no upkeep on the property for years. It's really about finding out what you want, what you're prepared to do and making sure you find a propery that fits that.

I think I'm willing to do quite a lot, but there will be loads on holes in my knowledge due to a lack of experience. I would hate to do months of work only to realise I missed something fundamental that meant I have to undo loads. I suppose if I'm not doing electrics, plumbing, or treating mould there's only so much damage I can do.

We just started looking before everything got put on hold, locally we found it better to contact the estate agents directly because they withhold new properties from rightmove for about a week so they can show it to those in their contacts first.

We bought our first home in 2015 with no help from friends or family. Just saved hard for 18 months or so and barely had a social life.

Why is this country full of semi-detached and terraced houses? Apparently its unique to the UK! It's disgusting that people are forced to live so close to their neighbours with no privacy. I had to live in one when I was renting and you could hear next door sometimes and now I live in a flat (which I regret) and I can hear even more noise.
My neighbours are not going to like me lol but I've been knocking on their doors telling them to turn their TVs down, be quieter if they have floorboards etc. Im gonna start printing off the council advice noise leaflets and posting it through to them next!

Fact is I shouldn't need to do all this as they should have common sense. God as im typing I can hear her stupid dog barking...luckily its an old dog.

Get composite decking - wood is shite.

And make the deck a rectangle/simple design and take it with you when you leave. Gonna be a few hundred quid, maybe a grand+

You could do with someone you know in the family or even work, who would be able to view the property and advise you on things.

My entire deposit I got from my mum passing away :/
