The twist will be that the soundproofing is installed incorrectly and ends up amplifying the noises from upstairs.

She might care if unapproved works affect your ability to sell the flat in future though.

today i will alter the walls of my flat by installing a new floating ceiling - without proper permission from the owners of the building. nothing could possibly go wrong!

Thanks although I bet most leaseholders do not. I am wanting to get it installed within the next two weeks so even if I do pay then I will have to do it retrospectively which just costs the same.

No mate, people strawberry floating follow the rules. Sorry your pea brain got rattled by a wardrobe being opened too many times, but you need to pay that gooseberry fool or you're going to end up in court. :fp:

Ultimately I cannot know what it might be, only what it is. Certainly the noises above me are no longer in my room, but remain upstairs – so a great improvement. It is pretty well what they led me to expect.

That's in interesting interpretation of acoustics.

The noise from the neighbors has now stopped but how do I stop the noises in my head?

So it's done it's job to block the noise so that it no longer intrudes to the flat below. Sounds good to me.
