Just given my deposit to my solicitors so they can exchange. My completion date is next Wednesday. I'm still kind of nervous and spending that amount of money at once is somewhat terrifying.

Does anyone have experience of a freehold house, with an attached leasehold garage? I'm looking at this house and I really like it, but attached to it is a double garage, and above that is a flat. The garage closest to the house would be mine, the other garage belongs to the flat above. I've been avoiding any leasehold houses, but not sure how much of a hassle the garage situation could be.

Hi GRcade been a while(ish)

Looking for accommodation in London. Anyone here got some advice other than "Don't"

The train into paddington and tube is stupidly expensive so commuting from where I am is a no go, and riding in takes about 2hrs so will get old really fast (and means getting up early :< )

Ideally looking to rent as I have just started a new job and don't really know what the future holds.

Don't really know what areas are good / what my options are (i.e do I just go studio or do I go 1 bed etc...)

Any advice really appreciated.

Cheers.

Kez

House share will be cheaper than a studio if you'd consider it

Only people I know who live in London are in Southfields. It seems nice but is still strawberry floating expensive and a walk and several tube stops away from anything interesting!

Which area are you commuting to? What is your budget? Any particular preferences as to what you are looking for in an area?

commuting right into the centre, Moorgate. I know London is going to be mad expensive, so I guess £900+- a couple of hundred.

As for preferences, a decent area - ideally with somewhere I can store the motorbike. Not too fussed on nightlife etc...

For that budget you will highly likely need roommates...unless you go well into outer london at which point you are kind of losing the point of moving in the first place

I would decide how long a commute you are willing to accept, and look at stations with direct commutes to Moorgate or Liverpool Street. Somewhere like Angel or Highbury & Islington would be super convenient if a bit on the pricey side (but doable on your budget with roommates). Hard to say too much though, best thing is to look at some areas yourself and see what you like/dislike.

£900 and still needing roommates!?!?!

I just couldn't bring myself to be spending that amount of cash to share a house in London, why do people do it? There are huge parts of the country where you could own a decent sized house for that kind of monthly outgoings!

totally agree, but for the job I am / want to be doing, I don't think I would get this sort of opportunity elsewhere.

if it comes to it then house sharing might be the option I have to go down short term. Really though I have been living in a room for 27 years and I am starting to really need some space of my own.

Could you not live outside of London and travel in, I mean it may cost the same but you’ll have more space and that.

I've been looking for a 1 bed recently. The best I can find in central London is about £1200-1250.

I was originally going to look further out i.e. Barking and commute in as it would only be about 30 minutes door to door, but a one bed was about £1050-£100 and then £200 for the zone 1 to 5 travel card.

I'll consider it, so long as the commute isn't that bad. Right now it takes about 2hours to get to work.

If I move to the likes of Reading it might take an 1h15m or a little more on the Train and Tube.

I could take the bike in, but rush hour traffic in the centre of London is horrendous it took me an hour to get to the close to the M4 and then on they way back home there is constant 50mph zones. (no fun at all!)

I think my biggest problem is I have no idea where to even start researching. I moved down to England nearly 2 years ago (all rather quickly, I was given 9 days to sort out accommodation) and where I am now was a the defacto place I had to be for my old job, anywhere else would have been stupid.

Now, I guess anything can be on the cards

does that make sense?

It’s all relative. Now I’m in New York I think of £900 as mega-cheap

Went shopping with my dad and step mum yesterday to find a sofa and curtains. Found ones I like, but I've got to wait for 2-3 weeks for the curtains and 9 weeks for the sofa. Atleast it's been sorted. My curtains overall came to nearly 500smackers, but I'm paying half now half later. My Dad/Step Mum said as a present for moving into my own place they'll buy my sofa and will do the same when my step brother eventually leaves home which was really nice of them. The sofa I've got is so comfortable <3

That's nice of them to get you the sofa, only thing better than a nice comfy sofa is a nice comfy sofa that you didn't have to pay for! :toot:

500 notes for curtains seems like a lot! How many windows have you got and how big are they?

3, well one is q glass door to my balcony, one is a massive window in my living room and one is an odd sized window in my bedroom. It's a royal pain but I had to get them all altered and all the poles and brackets and stuff.
