Nobody has curtains, it's all about those blinds and shutters now, man. Or so everyone keeps telling me.

'Oh wow, you still have curtains...'
'Yes, yes it's on 'the list' of things to update...'

*groan*

What kind of blinds are people going for there - roman? venetian? roller (cord pull or those ones that you pull down and zip back up themselves)?

We've got a mix of blinds and curtains - I think both work well in the right situation. Net curtains are something that only those in their 70s should have however!

We're going with curtains in bedrooms, blinds everywhere else.

Confirmed curtains the weekend just gone for the second bedroom, so literally for a room that may not ever even be in use unless I have a child who will eventually grow up to hate them. £1,200. What the strawberry float. We got another quote from somewhere else that was over £2k. :simper:

So i'm close to completing buying a house after moving into my current area and renting for 6 months. We're going to pay the movers to pack the flat as even though that is a few hundred quid extra it would be cheaper than the extra rental time it would take for us to do it ourselves. Saying that i'm packing all my warhammer/hobby stuff now because i want to do that myself. I know that once we buy this place we're not going anywhere for a very long time but it seems like i've moved every couple of years or less for a long time and i'm fed up of putting my entire life in boxes over and over again. At least this is the last time for a long time.

Congrats.

I’m with you on not wanting to move again. We’re hoping to move to a bigger place at some point but after that I’m never moving again.

Its a good job we're moving into our own place anyway, as the gf got a phone call from the sales part of our letting agents asking when someone could come for a viewing. Of our rented flat. That we had no idea was apparently up for sale and neither they nor the landlord had told us, despite a for sale sign being up for nearly a week. This is the second time that a place has been sold out from under us and even though now it doesn't really matter it still pisses me off that it can happen, and that apparently the people who actually live somewhere rented are the lowest priority to inform its happening.

How do curtains cost so much?

Just buy some bedsheets and put some holes in them for the rails at those prices

Good for acoustics. Especially if you have hard flooring.

Is this an accompanied viewing? If not, just agree to it, then strawberry float off for the day.

Advice needed. We moved into our new rented place two weeks ago today. The house was furnished but as we already have our own nice sofa, we requested that the existing sofa be removed - this was agreed and is in the tenancy agreement.

The sofa is still here. A giant leather corner monstrosity. We've taken it apart but it's taking up a large part of our living room, and blocking one of the windows. The landlord is based in Canada so has a management company running things. Repeated phone calls to the management company have been met with excuses. 'Mark isn't in the office right now, he'll call you back.' 'Ah yes, we're working with our contractor to get it sorted.'

Another email sent on Thursday, no response. I'm planning on emailing again Monday afternoon if they haven't come back, telling them that as removal of the sofa was part of the tenancy agreement, we will be arranging removal and disposal and invoice them if it isn't resolved.

Any issues with that, given the sofa isn't ours?

If you arrange it yourself where would you get it removed to that doesn't cost you storage fees?

The idea was to pay someone to remove and dispose of it. What other option is there if the management company take no action?

I'm hoping the threat will force them into doing the thing they're obligated to do anyway.

I don't think you can get away with disposing of it in the first instance. You need to give multiple written warnings with decent time frames. Document everything.

Leave it out the front and tell them to pick it up.

I've put an offer in on three houses in the last month, and two of them seemed to have quite high asking prices based on the fact the same type of house in the same street had sold for 10-15k less in the last 6 months, but both of them ended up going for the asking price. Nothing in the area stays on the market for much more than a week which would probably suggest the asking prices are low, but I have this mentality when it comes to buying anything where I don't want to pay more if something has gone for cheaper recently, and it's really hampering my efforts to get a house :fp:

There could be many reasons for significant differences in prices like that. Could be a nice patio area, brand new kitchen, loft conversion, bigger size, extra bedroom, modern v old etc.
