Buying a house (and renting)

I honk!

I have a Samsung washing machine, think it was about £450. It's really good and I've been very impressed with it. Only problem is the really annoying tune it plays whenever it finished a cycle, it goes on for strawberry floating ages! There are about 4 or 5 points where it could happily end and then it just carries on for more!

It's like some closet composer was trapped working for the Samsung home appliances department and this was their only outlet for their art.

This goes on for a good 30 seconds, someone was clearly proud of their work.

It's the way it feels like it could be ending every few seconds that's most frustrating, it builds to a natural sounding conclusion and then just carries on!

I assumed there was a means to disable it, but in a way I think I would miss it now.

I've basically developed Stockholm syndrome with my own washing machine!

That's not even the whole thing, it does another few bleeps after the end of that too!

The pompous cheery-nature of that would drive me insane very quickly.

I've got that one cracking little tune.

I inherited our washing machine (Hotpoint) from my Gran's friend when he died, they reckoned it was about 25 years old, which is a good innings for a washing machine. It requires you to manually move the cycle along at points so you have to remember, but otherwise it's fine.

He might have been talking rubbish but the guy who sold us our Samsung washing machine said that it's the South Korean national anthem. I never checked.

I have that machine too. That tune is so good I had the biggest gooseberry fool eating grin when I unpacked it and did the initial configuration cycle

I had a £700 LG washer/dryer and I currently have a Bosch £350 washing machine. I do now miss not having a tumble dryer, though there was some pipe or tube you always had to empty of water and fluff at the front which was a bit of a faff. The rubber seal has started to mould on the Bosch quite badly (it's fine, it's just gradually turning from grey to black) whereas the LG didn't, so I don't know if they coated it in something.

Saying that, my gran had the same washing machine for almost 30 years. Didn't go wrong once. Makes you wonder why today's tech, no matter how much you pay for it, is lucky to last 10...

Planned obsolescence isn't it. Things used to be built to last, now they're built to last for a certain, shorter length of time. Or, in the case of tech, purposely 'updated' over time to slow things down, consume storage, or drain batteries faster, and ultimately make you buy a new one.

As for washing machines, I have a cheap Beko one that's lasted me about 4 years or so, and is still working fine. Fewer frills, fewer things to go wrong. Sure, it can be a bit noisy, but it's once a week for less than an hour, so doesn't bother me at all. No tumble dryer, just open the windows and air dry them.

Guy above me seems to be doing laps of his apartment at various points during the day. It's one way to stay active I guess.

So due to COVID-19 we can no longer borrow the sum we need to buy the house we've agreed to purchase.

This has actually worked in our favour though as the bank offered us £7.5k less, we went back to the seller with this and explained why we've had to revise our offer and he accepted!

Sounds like a good quality machine built back in the day when things were built to last. New Hotpoints these days only last a few months...

Thats why I like Miele because they still over 10 year guarantees and claim their machines will last 20 years as they still build to a high quality.



The Samsung machines seems pretty cute with the song at the end lol but not my cup of tea sorry.

Update on the situation, the lady from the flat above has ordered a new machine and said won't be using her broken one anymore until it arrives. But apparently she has a long wait for the delivery...I was gonna offer her mine in the meantime but not sure.

Do we have anyone on here who is in the building trade?
