I'm one of those guys that hasn't bought my own clothes and has been wearing the same wardrobe for years. But everything is wearing out and I'm in dire need of some style.

Where is the best place to order clothes online? Honestly, I have no idea if I should be using places like Topman/Debenhams or if that's all tat and I should be using something else.

I'm absolutely pathetic

Aren't you in your 30s? How?

I'm trying more and more to avoid "fast fashion" brands, even if realistically, most non fast fashion brands are still only really sustainable because of existing production practices and supply chain infrastructure as a result of fast fashion being so prevalent. And my job also involves shipping fast fashion clothing items. A good alternative is to buy second hand/thrift products. Alternatively, items you know will last with care.

I recently got back into raw denim jeans again, basically jeans that are dyed, but unwashed, so they're a uniform dark indigo to begin with, and they fade with wear, so they arrive to you with the least pre-treatment, prolonging their lifespan and reducing the water consumption in production. They're then supposed to mould to you as you wear them and break them in, and the eventual fades that come with washing will reflect how you wear them and the stress you put them through. There's a large part of the "denimhead" community who will swear you should go as long as possible without washing jeans for the best fades, but this is incompatible with having a young child, and also reduces the lifespan of the jeans because all the dirt that builds up eventually damages the fabric.

With that in mind, I'd recommend sticking with 100% cotton for most of your clothing choices. While some Elastane might make things feel a bit more comfortable with stretch, they tend to degrade faster as the elastane can break down, especially if you put them in a tumble dryer, and in my experience, elastane also begins to smell after a long while, and it's really hard to get out properly.

All good advice there, Knoy, cheers.

And I'm 33. I have, of course, bought the odd item of clothing over the years but I mostly make do with clothes I receive as Christmas/birthday gifts.

Looking at Levi's jeans and why is everything ripped and torn?! Literally none available in my size that aren't distressed in some way.

Are we reliving the 90s now?

Losing all my willpower already.

Have you considered ASOS.com? Buy yourself some cheap basic tshirts, a couple pairs of slim fit or straight jeans and some trainers you like.

Don't overthink it and don't spend too much on one item. Set a budget and buy the basics and things that will easily mix and much with all your other clothes. Perhaps a pair of neutral coloured chinos. They'll work with dressed shoes and trainers.

Also, this guy...

I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned charity shops! I found myself bored whenever my fiancee was browsing through charity shops, so I researched brands online to find those that suit my style the most, costing more than I'd like to pay new and have put together a list and crack it out whenever I'm in one.

This year, I've bought White Stuff, SuperDry, Ted Baker, Lee and Tommy Hillfiger tops and I've paid no more than a tenner for any of them. The last shirt I bought for £8 was for sale new for literally ten times that. I could have nabbed loads more, but I only buy second hand if it's a brand I'm keen on, a design I really like and in great condition. Top tip - travel to the fanciest town nearby. The charity shops there will have the best bargains.

If you don't want to spend your time browsing charity shops and want a bargain, Vinted is your online equivalent. 'New with tags' is an option if you're not so keen on pre owned. You'll buy the odd dud, but when you're paying so much below retail, that's fine!

For trousers and jeans it's a whole different story!

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

I go for the 502 Tapered style which have better, less ripped/torn styles

I've barely bought any clothes these past four years or so. Right now I'm making my jeans and T-shirts really last; I'd be in real trouble if I had to dress up "smart" for anything. I hope to update my wardrobe a bit when I'm back into work.

There was a BBC article recently about no wash denim, it sounds strawberry floating rancid

I legit thought you were about 45 :shifty:

I'm almost sure I have tried this as I'm still at the stage of parenthood where I have a bottle permanently on standby. I definitely tried Dettol. It's like deodorant staining around the pits so I might need to soak it.

Where were you half an hour ago?! :x

I've just ordered some bits from Asos in the end. Mostly black, or at least dark, like my soul. Will let you know how I get on when they arrive.

Literally yes.

Could try these 80s cut 501s, rigid selvedge denim, they're shrink to fit, so buy a size up and either give them a gentle wash with no spin cycle of detergent, or soak them in a bath of lukewarm water for 30-40 mins, then hang dry to get most of the shrink out.

Edit: the link helps

Edit 2: these Uniqlo stretch selvedge jeans are also good, and a bargain at £40 for Japanese denim.

Just remembered the last time I asked for clothing advice

You have to realise though that the above was partly in jest. Partly.

I get quite a lot of my gear at outlet centres like Gunwharf Quays, Clarks Village, Gloucester quays and Bicester village.

I like to get the posher brands but can't usually afford them at full price. :toot:

I feel this is a bad time for me to realise a good chunk of my current wardrobe is somehow from M&S. :dread:

We really shouldn’t have been so surprised when you revealed your previous identity a couple of months later.

Nothing wrong with M&S, I've got a few of their items (such as my current pair of shorts) and they're decent.

I have literally two pairs of tracksuit bottoms (a 10 year old pair of Nike onnes and a pair of new-ish Underarmor ones, it's very difficult to find ones that fit properly due to being permanently sat down, normal trousers/jeans are not feasible) and around 25 tee-shirts.
