I miss the proper king sized mars bar (and marathon for that matter). None of this two smaller bars in a big wrapper bollocks, but a proper oversized bar in all dimensions, that would be difficult to even fit in your mouth, and even when it was you'd tend to dribble down the sides once it was in there. So big you may not be able to finish it off in one go and may have to leave your jaw to recover a little before going back for more.

We bought a pack of 'snack sized' mars bars for last weekend's camping trip, and I swear most of it is taken up by the wrapping. Overly stiff wrapper on the main bar, inside an oversized outer, means the once you pulled the wrapper back, what was underneath was pretty disappointing in size. It was more like a heroes sized bar than a proper one :x

I hate shrinkflation, i'd rather just pay a bit extra if it meant the stuff stayed the same size.

What are they going to do, take a moral stand by buying Nestle instead?

There are other alternatives besides Nestlé products, and other brands that don't engage in 'shrinkflation', or at least not to the same degree. They could switch to those products instead.

We should have a "no context fishing" for posting bait specifically

The choice in chocolate is basically between the big three of Cadbury/Kraft, Nestle and Mars - who all engage in similar practices - or cheap own-brand supermarket stuff. There's the higher-end stuff like Lindt or Green and Blacks but that's hardly appealing to switch to if your complaint is about rising prices!

I've started buying Tony's Chocolonely. Expensive though. Even on promotion the bar is 3 quid. But it's thick. Like Yorkie used to be.

That's always looked quite tempting, but the price hasn't, even when it's been on offer.

I bet they won't stop selling their yard of chocolate blocks that they have in their own shop. I'll have to check it out and see some time!

They will, but it'll only be a millimetre thick.

Letting the air out of the packets is deflation, though.

Never heard of this, but it’s got an interesting story behind it.

In 2002, investigative reporter Teun van de Keuken of the Dutch television show Keuringsdienst van Waarde found that none of the chocolate manufacturers that had signed the Harkin–Engel Protocol was upholding the agreements made in 2001 (producing 'slave-free' chocolate from 2005 on). He decided to take action himself by recording himself eating 17 bars of chocolate and subsequently taking himself to court for "knowingly purchasing an illegally manufactured product"[1]. To make a case against himself, he convinced four former cocoa plantation child slaves from Ivory Coast to testify against him. By 2007, the Dutch attorney general had the case dismissed for being outside their jurisdiction.

When none of the companies he contacted showed any interest in producing chocolate bars made differently, he started manufacturing his own chocolate, and in November introduced a milk chocolate bar made entirely from 'slave-free' cocoa. The name of the company is derived from the fact that he created the business by himself, without any help from the already existing chocolate industry.
