The Simpsons started in 1989, society has progressed a lot in that time. There is a lot in there that hasn't aged well at all.

Society has definitely moved on from when the show started (although depressingly little progress has been made in some ways

) but Homer and Apu is from like the mid-90s, it was pretty out of touch then as well.

Was it though? I feel like in the mid 90s it would have been seen as perfectly acceptable, they certainly didn't get criticised for it as far as I'm aware.

Even as a kid I certainly remember finding it a bit troubling. But yeah they probably didn't get much flak at the time

I mean there's a certain degree of separation you can do between humour and dodgy-ness - it's from the golden era of the Simpsons so the writing is largely on point even if it treads on some troublesome ground
