Burns, Flanders, Skinner, Smithers, Lenny, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert, Scratchy, Otto, Rainier Wolfcastle, Jasper, Reverend Lovejoy

That's a lot of pretty major characters to lose.

The show itself is a sub-par impersonator nowadays so I don't see why this should be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Possibly still hope? Whether that's good news or bad news is up for debate....

I think it'd take a few main voice actors to go to kill the show. But Harry Shearer voices some of the most iconic and best characters on the show and I doubt any replacement could fit in his shoes. I don't think its beyond the show to kill/retire his characters off and replace them with doppelgangers (like Fit Tony) Oh no, Mr Burns and Smithers were killed in a reactor meltdown and new characters Mr Cold and Walter Smithee have taken over the plant.

Wasn't the Fat Tony replacement done by the same voice actor though? I thought it was more supposed to be a joke of how easily crime bosses can be replaced.

Or they'll just re-use old voice clips spliced together. After so long they'll have plenty to work with.

I see they're keeping up to date by getting an artist who was 'funny' in 2007 to animate for them.

I'm not sure what to make of that. I'll give them that it was unsettling, I guess. Is it a reference to anything in particular that I'm missing the context on?

It was more like an adapted preview for World of Tomorrow.

PsychicSykes' response was far better than that couch gag ever will be.

The joke is that eventually a television show will devolve into catchphrase spewing, merchandise pushing gooseberry fool if allowed to go on long enough. The couch gag is what would happen to the Simpsons if it was to go on for an infinite amount of time.

Yeah, I know. The couch gag is simpsons as it currently is taken to an extreme.
Edit: It was made by Don Hertzfeldt if that gives it more context.

That just makes me feel kind of sad about the whole affair. There's just enough wit left in the writers to know they're producing rubbish; it's like the last lucid moment of a man succumbing to a fatal brain injury. :(

I like to think that that writers are so well paid that they're happy to produce rubbish instead of finding a more meaningful day job. They still do some constructive creative work elsewhere which keeps them happy and sane.
