The STI is pretty fast isn't it? I think it's going to be hard finding something that fits all those criteria and is cheaper to run. The only things that are coming to mind are high end station wagons, but I don't really know what's on offer over there other than Mercedes.

I'm similarly struggling for what to get as my next car, though for different reasons.

My Diesel TT is doing pretty well and averaging 50-60mpg as I'm doing mostly motorway driving, but it's reaching the point now where it's going to start being a moneysink in the next 18 months or so. It's barely 3 years old but has already racked up 60,000 miles due to my long commute to work, manufacturer warranty and breakdown cover expires at the end of this month as well.

Diesel's are becoming increasingly difficult to get hold of now though. Audi don't do a Diesel TT anymore, Mercedes don't do a Diesel SLC anymore, it seems that increasingly Diesel is being relegated to little hatchbacks or strawberry floating massive saloons and 4x4s that weigh the same as a truck.
On the other hand, Hybrid's seem to have died a death outside of Lexus, whilst most current Electric cars just don't have the range for a 150 mile round trip several days per week.

Isn't the build quality of the Model 3 shockingly bad in a fairly high percentage of builds?

I'd rate the infinity. Like driving a car from your sofa, comfy as strawberry float.

Yeah it was the early ones I'd heard the bad reports about, things like one side of the boot lid practically touching the body, whilst the other side you could get your hand between the gap.

I've never actually forayed into the used car market, always been a bit unsure of it, but I'd probably be even more unsure with something like a Tesla where there's a lot more complicated things to go very very wrong that nobody else can fix.

A friend of mine (well old friend) recently bought a stupidly large Range Rover thing. 19 Plate looks brand new.

I have no idea why anyone would be a car like this? It'll depreciate massively and cost him absolutely thousands. Do people on here buy cars like this? Or are you sensible and wait for something to be 3-4 years old?

But why? Do you have some sort of work scheme? Or get it on finance? or do you just let it depreciate massively and take the hit ?

I'm not trying to criticise, I'm just trying to understand such bad ways with money that completely go against all my logic.

The last couple I've bought on PCP, so I just hand it back after 3-4 years unless the trade-in is about equal with the outstanding finance.

I did look at just outright leasing, but my mileage is too high and most lease companies either just outright won't lease to you, or will end up charging you more than PCP would cost.
I guess I just prefer the feeling of having something new and knowing that there's a main dealer network to sort things if something goes wrong (Or take to task if they try and get out of sorting things)

I bought my car new in one payment. I did the math between buying a slightly used car and found that if you are good at bargain hunting a new car can be cheaper. New cars often come with pretty big rebates for buying with cash rather than financing, then there are other rebates and discounts for getting a demo model, or a model from last year.

Then you have the warranty to factor in, a new car is going to have a full warranty, while a used one will have less coverage. You might be able to get extended coverage but that will normally cost you thousands. You also need to consider how the previous owner took care of their car. Even a reliable brand can suffer at the hands of a bad owner and get some pretty severe damage.

Then there is some standard maintenance that should always be done when you buy a used car, which depending on the millage could again easily run into the one to two thousand dollar range (this might be less in the UK depending on mechanics rates). For example, to change a timing belt and water pump on a car, something that should be done ever 100,000km’s is about $1000 alone.

To give you an idea, I got my car, a 2016 Kia Optima EX (2.4L engine) with a $9000 rebate because it was a 2016 model and I got it in the spring of 2017. To get a similar car for the same price I would have had to get something at least 3 years old.

I should also add though, I don’t really care about re-sale value as I just plan to drive this car into the ground.

The days of "Discount for cash" are pretty much gone with car buying in the UK. Most places will probably give you a better deal for finance since then they'll get a commission from the finance company as well as the sale of the car.

I really wish the Mazda MX-5 RF came in either a Hybrid or Diesel engine, it's a thing of beauty really.

I’ve only had two cars so far, neither have been brand new but if I found something I really fancied that happened to be brand new I certainly would think about it but I would want to own it eventually rather than getting into a 3 year cycle of PCP payments before getting something new, nothing against people who do this but its not something I’d be hugely keen on doing. I’m really getting the itch for something new as well, too much choice though.

I doubt Mazda would ever put a hybrid or Diesel engine in the MX-5 unless they were forced to. I think the current version of the MX-5 is just stunning though, been tempted by a couple of used models over the past year but always talk myself out of going to test one.
