I went and drove a 208 gti today - Ive been looking at the gti peugeot sport which is the more hardcore version but very hard to find so I thought Id try a regular one as it was a 5 min walk away

took it out on some of my fave scooby roads and tanned its arse and I actually really liked it, if its better in ps spec then I think Ill get one

its 100bhp down on the subaru but it actually feels pretty fast - only a second or so down on the 0-60 and is a different sensation actually getting there, way more responsive - I swore Id never get another fwd car but this one bites hard and scrabbles about a bit and feels fun and the ps one comes with a new front setup and an lsd and is apparently super good

interior is spartan but I like it and the tech is way better than the subaru

and I can use normal fuel and get more than 20mpg with it, and the insurance is less than half and the tax 1/5th, and I bet its not gonna cost me about £500 every 10k to keep happy - only major cost appears to be that its built for pilot sport tires and has a healthy appetite for them

very tempting

Peugeot have definitely improved over the past few years. They've gone from being universally drab and boring cars owned mostly by elderly people in the 2000s-early 2010s to a much more youthful and attractive brand with much better design and engineering.

I've been looking for an estate car that looks good and is nice to drive. Budget is approx £16k. Needs to have under 150g/km emissions to get my full cash allowance from employer. (so no Golf R estate :() not bothered if petrol or diesel but petrol would be nice for engine sound. Nothing older than 4 years (5 if good example) and preferably under 35k on clock.

I've considered SKODA Octavia VRS, BMW 330d, Seat Leon FR, Audi A4 is too expensive and I don't know if I like Mercs.

What would you buy with that criteria?

Focus ST estate if you don’t mind Fords? Just put ST-3 variant into Autotrader and the cheapest was under £16k within a 25 mile radius of me, 43k miles though but there was one with less miles for just over £16k, would have to be disel to get under the emissions though. Most are 17 plates in my local search as well.

This reminds me of the 205 GTI 1.9 I owned for around 6 months. The car was quick but not compared to newer cars around the time I owned it but it was such a great drive would love to own one now but they can be silly money.

Could be a terrible suggestion, but what about a Fabia Estate ?

  • Brand new it sits perfectly in your price range - no 2nd hand car for you!
  • It's a VAG, so should drive well
  • It's an estate (albeit a midget estate)
  • emissions should be low enough to get allowance from your bosses.

The old Fabia estate looked like a bloated old person's car, but the newer trim version looks ok - just wish Skoda would redesign their front grille, it's too rounded to suit the sharper angles of their facelift designs

Could've sworn they used to do it in their VRS/GTi engine. But not anymore :(

Can anybody clarify me with the new road tax band fee?

Example - 155g/CO2 - £540 at the first year, the second year would be £150? Is this right? :fp:

Cheers.

Any recommendations for a decent SUV car?

Missus wants me to get a nice big car for when the baby arrives in September. I quite like the Audi Q3 but truthfully, I know very little about cars.

Probably looking to pay around £15k second hand I guess.

i test drove the peugeot sport yesterday, its way more agile than the standard and firmer, quicker etc - the lsd makes a world of difference, its a very unique feeling for a fwd, really bites hard in the corners and handles very well - makes its way down country roads pretty rapidly, which is my main fun outlet

still not a patch on the sti but ive come to accept that nothing probably ever will be, i wont find perfect so i need the comprimise that works best for me

corners of the car are a little hard to see compared to mine but i suppose thats the way with modern safety stuff

will probably buy this week i think

I think that’s right, yeah. They’ve made it all stupidly complicated.

Just how large are you expecting the baby to be?
