What is the most economical medium sized car I can get for 10K?

I was thinking something like a Peugeot 308 or a Seat Leon diesel

Please note to the car lovers, I want it to be as economical as possible, the UK roads are boring and overcrowded motorwayfilled shitheaps, so there is no point buying anything 'fun' or classy if it's just driving up and down the M5/M6 and around towns. Just has to work well and get every penny out of the diesel it can.

Thanks!

edit: just realised you said medium car. Ignore my gooseberry fool advice below

You ought to look at the very stylish and not at all geared at old people Honda Jazz.

Currently returning 55mpg on my 12 plate Jazz.
Cheap to insure (no thief would be seen dead in one) and tax. Parts are cheap.

They just don't so well over 75mph :slol:

75mph is breaking the law anyway ;-) In these trying times i'll be sticking at 65mph on motorways! Plus always so much traffic anyways.

I enjoy a 308

Very simple inside, but still nice I feel - and prettiest car in the bracket

Seconding what False says, you won't go far wrong with a 308.

Seems pretty decent. That mileage and low C02 emission

Just spent over 1300 notes on my Civic. :dread:

Release bearing and slave cylinder no longer squeak incessantly but still... Hopefully that'll be the last big spend before I pick up something else.

i would honestly try to go petrol if you are buying now - better all round proposition than diesel, and nicer to drive imho

My dad lives about an hour away. I have a strict schedule when I get back to UK so I have to get my dad to look for me. North-East wales is a good area really, he can get to Manchester, Liverpool, Stoke, etc, lots of places that have big car sales.

Petrol cars have far less MPG than diesel, and even with the price increase for cost of fuel, my calculations lead me to diesel being more economical, especially these boring 1,6litre engines.

I had a diesel Ford Focus when I was last in UK, i like the way a diesel drives and feels if honest. The lower REVS are nice.

To be fair, I've not driven one. The dealer has an Astra with similar mileage and a Volvo V60 with far higher miles. So I'll ask Dad to look at them too.

Got a couple of part-exchange quotes on a Suzuki Swift Hybrid SZ-T (£175pm) and a Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid (£225pm) and I really don't know what to do.

I could afford either but I don't know how much I want the Sport vs paying £50 less a month.

Think my car might be due a new battery, halfway through a week off and I went to start it and while the dashboard lit up, it showed no signs of actually firing up.

I’m trying to keep the Civic till it ticks over to 100k. It’s currently nearing 96k.

I don't have a full list of differences to hand but the main difference is going to be in the engine, a 1.2 dualjet vs 1.4 boosterjet. I'm not au fait with car specs but I love my current 1.0l boosterjet Swift which is my I'm happy to exchange for another.

Have you asked Quentin Wilson for advice?
