Picked up my Arteon RLine last night. Wow. Simply amazing car and technology.

Best bit so far was its autonomous acceleration, braking and ability to come to a complete stop in a mix of heavy, medium and light traffic on the busy M6 & M42. All of it was without me touching the pedals at all!

I must admit to hovering my foot over the brake ready at all times, but to be sat in the driver's seat as it eased off when someone pulls in front of me, or completely, and smoothly braked from 70 - 0 as we exited and approached a roundabout, was amazing. I literally had to steer for a few miles and no pedal input required. It kept up with the traffic no problem too.

I feel like people need to learn what a shitty car mod is. I mean there are loads in here which I think might look ugly, but they're pretty obviously well done.

Like this is tacky but well done. Also it's mostly just paint, hardly a mod.

I've experimented further and found that, at 70mph on a dual carriageway for example, it will steer itself too! . As long as Lane Assist is turned on, together with the Adaptive Cruise Control that does your speed and braking, then the car literally does everything for you. It uses the white lines both sides of the car to keep it perfectly in the centre of your lane.

After a short while of no steering input, a warning sound and visual alert occurs (within 20-30 secs max). If still no input, then a much louder sound occurs, again with a visual input. It was at this point I thought I best resumed control in case it went the whole hog and pulled me over to the roadside, parked and called the emergency services (which is an optional extra that could have been fitted by whoever ordered it originally).

I didn't want to have to explain to Mr Police Officer why my car had auto dialled 999 /101 !

Took my boss out for a quick spin in it at lunch. He was amazed by its autonomous braking

so how does it drive manually?

Loving it. I've done about 250miles so far. The 7-speed DSG auto is smoooooth.

That reallyis incredible, if love to try something like that out. It amazes me how resistant people are to self driving cars. OH YOU'D NEVER GET ME IN ONE OF THOSE. Even though they'll happily get on a plane that can take off fly AND land without any input.

That does sound amazing. I’ve never understood the dislike towards driverless cars, I enjoy driving when you get on a nice, quiet road but most of driving now is just stuck in traffic which does annoy me slightly, even more so when no one can seem to read the speed limit signs! Everyone seems to be happy going 50 in a 60 (although there are some national limit roads out there that really shouldn’t be driven at 60 mph) or 40 in a 30. At least when driverless cars arrive this will be a thing of the past and I’d have thought roads should become quite a bit safer.

What about the planes that crash because they won’t let the pilot take back control?

Does this really change anything though? I mean people have been stealing cars for as long as they've existed, the technique has just changed slightly. I think the more worrying thing is being able to disable cars while they're being driven as some researchers did with the Jeep Cherokee a few years ago.

I strawberry floating hate driving to Cornwall or Wales (sorry Ad/Pedz) or up north for trips or holidays. Anything longer than 2 hours behind the wheel makes me annoyed

Little sub being serviced today, 3 year major service, plus the air con has issues - costs are amusing

Plus they told me I need 4 tyres

Gave me a 308 service car which still looks great but it’s shite to drive

air con condenser is goosed and I made a fuss so its all being done under warranty

tyres I managed to get some pilot sport 4's for 500 with fitting etc on saturday

service comes to 340.. mad

308 for the night and thank god it has cruise control, comfy drive for a normie though - but I dont like the steering weighting, feels variable based on speed or position and I dont like it

It truly is, I've been tempted to install a dashcam just to catch some of the nonsense that I see on a daily basis!

Ive been looking at what to get for my next car and struggling for options really

criteria: faster, cheaper to run, more comfy, space for people + their gooseberry fool, cruise control, good stereo

Ive narrowed it so far to m140i, e90 m3 saloon, xe-s... which isnt a lot to choose from really

wont be buying anything till next year and looking for less than £20k

ideas?
