PostCasually jogging in horror games. What is it with that?
by Gemini73 » Sat Oct 09, 2021 10:53 am

When I was playing through RE2 Remake it always annoyed me just how slow Claire would move when being chased. Not so much as a running from a monster intent on tearing one's face off, but more a brisk stroll. My eldest daughter enjoyed watching me play through the game, but would always laugh "Why does she move so slow!" when Mr X would find me and I'd have to get the hell out of there.

I'm currently playing TloU Remastered and the same thing happens here. "Move dammit!" I find myself saying in frustration as Joel just casually jogs away from impending death.

The same with The Medium which I recently finished.

I get that it's probably just a mechanic purposely designed to create further tension, but for me it's just frustrating. "strawberry floating run like the clappers you idiot, you're going to die!"

Does my nut in!

I'd rather have my intestines torn out and strangled with them than have to face the horror of having to run.
I strawberry floating hate running.

As long as you’re outpacing a deadly threat you don’t need to run any faster. You have no idea if they’re going at full speed, or how much stamina they have. If you start at a sprint you’ll just tire yourself out and could end up getting caught while you try to recover.

The moral of the hare and the tortoise is literally “slow and steady wins the race”

You'd think if you live in the time of zombies you'd probably train to go both far and fast

It would be interesting to have a horror game that gives you the option to either jog sustainably or sprint once then get too tired do anything but walk for a while.

I imagine it would probably be too frustrating, but I think (as Jiggles was saying) that's a decision you'd have to actually have to plan around in a real zombie apocalypse.

Resi 2 is ground zero on outbreak day.

Although the main characters are a trained police man and a former nember of their equivalent of a SWAT team...

It really breaks the realism.

On the original PS1 version I enjoyed tapping the run button, which gave the impression that Leon and Claire were skating around Racoon City as the run animation always started left foot first.

Dying Light takes a very different approach, though the zombies gain a speed boost too. It would be fun to swap the lead characters around. The Resi cast would be dead in seconds in Harran, blocked by some rubble. The only exceptions would perhaps be Wesker who could practically teleport in the end and Chris who would just punch his way through brick walls.

Meanwhile Kyle would probably find himself continually bumping his head on the ceiling and running in to walls in the narrow locations of Racoon City, though I'm curious what weapon he could make out of a crank handle and a Bishop chess piece.

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Or just team up with a bunch of fat guys who you can outrun.

I assume it helps to build tension, kind of like how someone (usually a woman) trips over while being chased in horror films.

I'm playing Visage and frankly a light jog would be preferable to the pathetic shambling in that.

Alan Wake can run fast.

But he is on a verge of collapsing after just less than a minute.

Yes another annoyance and not one just confined to horror games. I'm not particular fit, but I can run for longer than most video game hero-types.
