I think that’s a bit unfair to say. Yes, that is a big part of Black Mirror but isn’t what it’s about. Take San Junipero, not shocking in the slightest but probably one of the greatest episodes.

I’ve only seen the VR episode but strawberry floating your mate in VR while your wife persuses her sexual fantasies isn’t exactly on the tame side :slol:

Enjoyed that episode too. Also Pom :datass:

I actually liked Smithereens far more than the other 2. I think I connect more with the episodes based in Britain. However, that one felt the least like a Black Mirror episode to me, it was just a decent hour of drama Television.

Only watched the Miley Cyrus one so far but I enjoyed it.
Could probably have done with losing 10 minutes from the first half, but otherwise was a very solid episode. Perhaps I had already lowered my expectations going in after hearing lots of negative reviews.

Yeah but the non shocking episodes with happy endings like San Junipero and Hang the DJ were rare but both great

Ive seen the first two of S5.

Fighting vipers had that initial shock, but then it was just boring filler. The hour show could have been 25min.
Smithereen was much better. Intriguing and drew me in, with some good development, sentiment and commentary on the power of social media. Its a shame we didnt get some kind of pay off for the girls suicide - i was expecting some kind of clever full circle twist.. This is what i expect off Black mirror.
Not seen the Miley Cyrus one yet.

That Miley Cyrus ep must be one of the worst ones yet. I was feeling it then it went off a cliff by the end.

Really dull series, and the Miley Cyrus one was especially gooseberry fool, quite like the song though.

The first episode was the most “Black Mirror”, episode 2 was the best of the new episodes and episode 3 felt a little out of place. I didn’t hate any of them, but they were not up to the usual quality.

Finally watched the latest three episodes. Not great overall, although I though Smithereens was gripping. Andrew Scott was fantastic.

Striking Vipers was an interesting concept but completely unworthy of its runtime. It never expanded on or played with the initial concept, so ended up feeling repetitive and forgettable by the end. At two points I predicted different things were about to happen that didn't - and would have been way more "Black Mirror":

1) There was a point where I thought he was going to find his kid playing the game, and his friend would not realise it was the kid online and started playing with him. Would have been dark as hell but it seemed plausible.

2) At the end I thought they were going to fight in-game again (bringing their online interaction full circle) but this time a serious fight, knowing each other could feel the pain through the game, and that it would end up actually killing one of them in real life. This was all set up and everything so I almost think it was deliberately subverted.

Smithereens was as I say much better. It had me hooked from beginning to end with its central plot that was slowly unveiled, the acting was excellent, and it had several themes running through it and different questions asked. It was proper Black Mirror.

Then there was "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" :dread:

Completely agree. I thought it was disappointing and a little farfetched, and then it just jumped into absurdity three quarters of the way through. Probably my least favourite episode of Black Mirror ever. I wouldn't watch it again, I was even struggling to finish it first time through.

You can really tell the difference between the early Black Mirror episodes and the newer ones.

I like the early episodes a lot better even though you can tell they had less budget to work with.

Definitely. The British setting and low budget makes them feel a lot more grounded, and therefore real.

Smithereens felt the most like that of the newest three.

Shut up and Dance really taps into the feeling the first two seasons had.

I really wasn't a fan of S4. It just never grabbed me.
