How's everyone getting on then?

Toyed about with the Super Mario Bros 3 randomizer last night and it's interesting to see what you can do with it. Especially odd getting a World 8 level in World 1. I know there was some interest in doing a SMB3 race, which I'm more than happy to set up. I don't know if it comes with a built-in timer though. ALTTP gives you a screen at the end showing how long it took you and I don't know if that's in this one.

Either way, I'm gonna look into getting that set up for the end of the week (Probably Thursday night).

Has any one else finished off ALTTP yet?

EDIT: I might do a run tonight of a fresh ALTTP seed. Not a race, just a playthrough. Probably start about 8ish if anyone is interested.

I completely missed the bit about trackers before starting, so I'm thinking of starting again. Only just got out of the sewers.

I would be VERY up for an SMB3 run, I know that game like the back of my hand.

I don't think it does, I did grab Live Split as I didn't know Zelda Rando had a timer. Though I assumed the speed running community use live splits with that too.

I think they use splits for vanilla runs, but randomized runs are unpredictable so they seem to use the in-game time.

We might need to come up with some way of timing the SMB3 race.

Fair enough. I've never seen in game times used before for games random or not.

Glad you liked it.

It was an interesting seed actually. Was Swordless for the first hour or so, but ultimately finished the game after 3:26. Would have been sooner, but I put off checking the Circle of Rocks (Up by Zora's River) in the Dark World for too long and it's where the Medallion to enter Turtle Rock was. That and I messed up Ganon's Tower by taking a chance that I had enough keys. I was one short and had to go all the way back to find more. That cost me a good ten minutes or so.

Ganon was a bit more of a dick than I expected though and I took a lot of damage that I could have avoided.

Thanks for those who joined in the stream. Was nice to have some company. Anyone else who is interested can watch it at the link below.

I would also add with Live Spilt you don't have to have multiple splits. Here's how I set mine up for ALttP Randomizer before I saw it had a time screen at the end in Devlin's pic.

Image

You make the splits yourself and stuff. It's really rather simple.

Here's what I followed to make sure I didn't cock up though.

https://livesplit.org/introduction/

This is what I see all speedruns use (or races) they just don't have splits and just have the end goal.

Super Mario Bros 3 Proposal

Ok. Since I'm not going to be about for a week as of Saturday I want to get the SMB3 "race" set up so you guys can take part.

I'm not going to be taking part in this one (It's not really the type of randomizer that interests me), but I will generate the seed and make it available to those who do. So basically I need to know what you want it to be.

I'm going to set it to shuffle ALL the stages around. This includes fortresses, castles and ships. I'm also going to shuffle the Pipes (So the route to the end of a world could be different) and the Warp Zone (So you don't know what world it will take you to). It will also shuffle in 8 "Lost" stages that are in the code, but not actually used in the "vanilla" game.

I can also shuffle the following settings, which I would like to see some preferences for:

Randomize Enemies - If selected, enemies are shuffled in levels, resulting in madness!
Randomize Koopa Kid Earthquakes - Normally, only Roy and Ludwig cause earthquakes when they jump. If selected, two random kids will have the earthquake jump.
Randomize Koopa Kid HP - If selected, it will take between 1-5 stomps on a koopa kid head to kill it, or between 5-15 fireballs.
Randomize Hammer Bros - If selected, the enemy in the hammer bros spots on each world will be a random brother (hammer/boomerang/fire/sumo).
Shuffle Hammer Bros Items - If selected, the items given out by hammer bros/plants in world 7 will be shuffled, allowing you to get any item from them.
Miscellaneous Tab

Randomize Music - If selected, stage music is shuffled.
Shuffle N Game - If selected, the card order in the N game is shuffled (compared to normal games).
Randomize N Game Prizes - If selected, the prize you get for making a match in the N game is randomized, with most items in the game (or 1ups) viable.
Shuffle Toad Houses - If selected, the prize you get from Toad Houses will be shuffled.
Randomize Castle Items - If selected, the items you get from Princess Letters will be randomized.

If there is anything you don't want to see from that list, then let me know.

Right now I'm inclined to just randomize everything and watch the chaos.

Also, how do you guys want to time this? Might be worth using a stopwatch on your phone or something. Or just don't bother and just have some fun with it. :D

Randomise it all!

The only one I can see causing real problems is randomising all the enemies. If it's really unplayable, maybe we could just do it without that element.

That was the main one I was worried about. God only knows what you'd end up with.

I'll just use Live Split to time it, due to it being on stream, it's what all the cool people use.

Second race!

Race 2 - Super Mario Bros 3 - Nintendo Entertainment System

Race ends 8pm on Friday 26th July.

Ok, so as detailed in my earlier post this will randomize almost everything in the game. Levels, World order, Warp Pipe destinations, Warp Zone locations, Toad Houses, Chest Items and more! The only thing I didn't randomize was the enemies found in each stage.

Goal: The game ends when Bowser is defeated!

To get started you will need to download the randomizer from the link here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/35uy12epy ... rSetup.exe
Once loaded (It may update to the most recent version), point it to your Super Mario Bros 3 ROM file, choose your Mario Color and enter the following in the Seed and Flags text boxes.

Seed: 509698218768
Flags: KHHZPB

Then hit the "Generate" button in the bottom left. It will create a new ROM in the same location as your SMB3 ROM.

Load it up in your emulator of choice (I use FCEUmm in Retroarch) and check the item code on the right hand side. It should look like the one below.

Image

If it doesn't, then something has gone wrong somewhere.

In terms of keeping your times, you will need to find your own way to do this as I don't think the game tracks it for you.

Finally, there's only really one rule.
Save states are allowed, but only to save your progress at the end of a session. It shouldn't be used to reset after a death.
Obviously this is just for fun, so there will be no-one, or way, to enforce this. We're just going to trust each other. :D

Have fun!

That's not too bad for the first randomizer run you've ever done in it. It's not about winning anything, just about enjoying yourself.

You gonna do the SMB3 race?

More than likely will give it a bash, but I'm crap at games so likely will finish it after 10 hours
