I don't have much interest in cycling or cycling people, most of them seem like the sporting version of trekkies to me, just with better social skills and mildly tolerable social hygeine, but this guy deserves respect. He won 6 Olympic golds, 2 Commonwealth golds and 11 World Championship golds... All done within the rules, Lance. Scotland's greatest Olympian of all time and probably the best Britain has ever had too. I'm gutted he won't be competing in Glasgow next year, he'd love performing in front of a home crowd, but if he feels he can't compete then fair enough, he's probably made the right decision.

So he's going to be a full-time referee now?

He should never, ever have been knighted.

He probably doesn't even have any armour.

Is this one of those "being contrary to be cool" posts?

He is getting on a bit, athletically speaking. Late 30s is usually the age for athletes to stop and move on. He seems like a cool dude in most things I've seen him in on TV and on twitter.

He didn't do anything worthy of that accolade. Yes, he's good at cycling but why does someone need to be honoured in this way just because they are good at something?

His reward should be the money he made by doing it and the prizes he won.

Honours like this should be reserved for people who do selfless things. He did all of the things he did for the benefit of himself.

My comment doesn't apply to just him, but pretty much every other celebrity or sportsperson who has received an honour like this.

He has never dressed up in a suit of armour and fought the French.

Anyone who is knighted should immediately be sent to the frontlines of a battle on horseback.
If there are no battles going on, just declare war on France or something.

Never really been into cycling, and I don't think I've seen any of his races/wins, but it's an impressive record for sure.

I don't think he should've been knighted either, but then I don't think any sportsman/actor/musician should.

Everyone seems to be able to get knighted these days. Even here.

Yeah, let's only knight businessmen and former politicians!

People are honoured for doing extraordinary things and serving the country. Climbing Everest, winning medals, building companies all deserve that recognition.

:fp: He's our most successful olympian of all time! If he doesn't deserve to be knighted, no one does.

Doing your job as a sportsman/politician/singer isn't extradordinary though IMO, or worthy of a knighthood. It's like when a sports team does well and wins something, you can almost guarantee they'll all get CBEs/OBEs - why? They're only doing what they've trained to do.

Knighthoods should be for people who do genuinely extraordinary things in ordinary walks of life/charity work/etc. Not just someone who's had a long career or done their job well.

Knighthoods should only be given to the terminally ill.

I think you should only give them to Knights, stop them getting wet.

This would be great. I would love to watch George Alagiah reporting on an inter-continental war with Chris Hoy, Bruce Forsyth and Terry Wogan at the frontline.
