I don't think the game actually says it's Christmas time, but I first played it at Christmas which probably fills in the gaps there for me.

This is a good shout, I remember it exactly the same way!

That's the thing - I can think of lots of games with snowy settings/sections that I have great Christmassy memories of, but not actually that many games or moments that are actually set at Christmas!

I had a routine of playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein around Christmas for quite a few years as it's got quite a few snowy alpine areas that evoke a nice "Where Eagles Dare" vibe! I originally got it in the run up to Christmas 2001 and have very fond memories of playing it on those long winter nights!

Parasite Eve is a great Christmas game. It starts on Christmas Eve and ends in Christmas Day.

Fond memories of playing every snow level I could once I finished school for Christmas. Two that come to mind are Phendrana Drifts in Metroid Prime and the tundra map in Smuggler's Run. Also really enjoyed Christmas/end of year issues of gaming magazines.

Bit obscure, but does anyone remember Mission in Snowdriftland? It was a 2D platformer advent calendar on the Nintendo website in 2006. Looks like it was remastered and released on Steam a couple years ago.

Oh damn, that one slipped my mind. Yeah, that scene is lovely.

Yep, that scene, with headphones on, is probably the most Christmassy I felt over the entire festive period.

What a fantastic game.

Also of note, is when Christmas comes along in Bully and Hogwarts Legacy, it gives both games a great atmosphere.

I'm looking at starting Hogwarts soon. How many hours (roughly) did you play before reaching the Christmassy part? Trying to time my playthrough.

Not sure to be honest, but the story follows the school year (which obviously starts in september) so it's not too far in.

The first thing that comes to mind is Diddy Kong Racing - Frosty Village, Snowflake Mountain, etc. The music is just
Freezeezy Peak as well, for sure. Majora's Mask comes to mind as well, more for the fact it released at Christmas (December 2000?), or I at least got it at Christmas and played it then, rather than the game or setting itself.

Just remembered another one, Hybrid Heaven, the deeply weird Konami N64 RPG where you do literal wrestling moves on aliens in sort of turn based combat in a big spaceship buried under New York during Christmas.

That does sound great. Might have to fire up the Steam Deck emulator.

I have no idea how or why I latched onto it as a child, but it's such a unique game that I have always remembered.

I never played it but I remember reading about it in magazines and thinking it sounded weird
