Cinematrix - A Daily Movie Trivia Game

Hot on the heels of Wordle and Connections comes another daily browser game that I’ve been playing for the last couple of weeks, based on how well you know movie collaborations and the filmographies of various actors.

Vulture release a new puzzle every weekday asking you to fill in a 3x3 grid with nine movie titles that match the requirements for both that column and row.

So if the row is “Jim Carrey” and column is “Kate Winslet” you would need to enter a film starring both of them, which in that case is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. For “Jim Carrey” and “Released from 1990 - 2010” you could enter any film he starred in during that period but crucially not Eternal Sunshine again, as all nine films must be unique.

An example of how a typical game might play out:

Image

You only get nine guesses in total so entering a movie that doesn’t meet the required criteria will mean a perfect score is impossible. Once you’re done (or you’ve given up) you get an overall score based on how obscure your answers are compared to all other players, which you can share here.

Anyway, give it a go!

Movie Grid does the same thing, and is linked via Vulture, while also not taking a break for the weekend and offers the opportunity to play archived puzzles, as well as different variations on the game (TV, older movies, scriptwriters etc).

Nobody can be told what Cinematrix is - you have to experience it for yourself.

Couldn't name a single film any of those actors have been in without prompting.

I'll stick with framed.

was really hoping the recent Lion King was more than two hours because I've never seen Beyonce in anything else  It's 1:58. Gutted.

I could only remember Dreamgirls and Goldmember as films Beyonce has been in.

I don't think I've ever seen her in a film and have no idea of anything she's been in, but I got 5/6 on the other two.

Edit: I have seen the pointless CGI Lion King but I didn't know she was in it (it's not live action because they didn't make real lions do it)

Yeah, Goldmember was the only one I could think of. Similarly blank on Amber Heard in the other puzzle. Are they usually so focused on the last decade or so?

Did much better on yesterday’s movie grid, though I couldn’t think of many Brad Pitt co-stars. Seven was obvious but I forgot it. Wildly varying percentages too. 100% for Burn After Reading, but around 3% for Talented Mr Ripley and Kingdom of Heaven.

Yeah both of the main challenges on Vulture and Movie Grid seem pretty 'current', although Movie Grid has a classic version that seems to be mainly focused on pre-2000 cinema.

The percentages I think are just the popularity of correct answers, so 100% should indicate that there was only one correct possible answer.

Slightly annoyingly it seemed to be missing Julie & Julia.

I just tried that and it worked.

It’s weird - it doesn’t appear with just Julie, but when you add the space it’s there.

Completed today's rows for Jeremy Renner and Eddie Redmayne no bother, but I can't think of a single Tilda Swinton film. :x
