The game can be a fantastic way to relax in sandbox mode with unlimited money.

Just make the ultimate city with zero restrictions and go completely wild.

I love Cities. Or rather the concept. However I struggle to get very far in. I’ve bought a lot of the DLC too but never really get to experience it.

My road design starts off with long straights which I then cross over to make smaller rectangular shapes but then the water, electricity and zoning aspects don’t really take off.

Looking at the videos in the OP post I would love to be able to do even a quarter of that.

What tips would you say I should follow?

Perseverance. Even if you think your city is turning out to be a disappointment, it's all a learning curve, and stuff will eventually click. I've only recently figured out properly how the heating system works, and how to elevate roads.

Also go with sandbox mode, it provides far greater freedom to plan your city without having to worry about your budget.

Also, when starting a new map, delete all the motorways up to the edges of the map, then rebuild them so they suit your needs (I built an M25 for westfield).

The Plazas and Promenades DLC is out now, it allows the creation of pedestrian zones, big plazas, new road layouts, 5 new unique buildings, and it also contains a new building style (just like the european suburbia dlc) so that entire neighbourhoods can be redesigned.

Here's how Westfield is looking so far with these updates...

Wow! That is really smart. Vermi... terrific building, man! It's amazing how large and detailed creations can be; I'm very impressed by it.

Two more content creator packs have been added to the PSstore now too, one is seaside resorts, and the other is mid century modern.

Has anyone else bought the new DLC that's been released? Two new expansion packs have come out recently called Skyscrapers and Heart of Korea.

I have both, and have now added the new buildings from Skyscrapers to Central Westfield, see here...

I haven't but will be downloading this on my PS5 at some point as it's included as part of the PS+ subscription, will be cool to play it a higher-than-potato resolution for a change

I bought this for my son recently, it was £12.99 instead of £60-odd for the Mayor's Edition on the Xbox... After watching a bunch of videos about it he said it looked perfect for him (he's 8 right now and wants to own and run a train and bus transport company when he's older), but he had one little go and told me it was too confusing for him :|

To be quite honest, I'm kinda overwhelmed by all the extra DLC stuff! I've never seen a game with so much DLC. I'd like to turn all the extras off and just get to grips with the base game to start with. He'll watch me play and I'm sure he'll pick it up in the long run. I figured it was an investment rather than a quick arcade fix.

It is best just to start small as getting to grips with everything can take a little time (especially if you've not played games like Sim City in the past), when i first started i built quite a small basic town, but then that gradually expanded and as time's gone on, i've added the DLC (i too started with just the base game) and planned out entire maps from scratch (which was how Westfield came to be, for that one the first thing built was the motorway links and M25).

This video is really good for complete beginners:

I've used this template with nearly all of my attempts on the Switch, and it's easily expandable.

TTD might be a good bet (Transport Tycoon Deluxe) as it is free to play on Steam as it's ancient.

You are then probably looking at the logistics games of a Sid Meier's Railroads, or something akin to this that is more modern (it is the basis of most train games really).
https://store.steampowered.com/app/7600/Sid_Meiers_Railroads/

Or if puzzle levels are a better fit then Train Valley 2 is a fair shout.https://store.steampowered.com/app/602320/Train_Valley_2/.

[Edit: Finally, a Mini Metro or Mini Motorways would be a great entry level type game if a little abstraction won't switch him off, and should be on app stores too.]

If I was using Skylines, then you should build a city with no transportation and then pass it over to your son to put train stations and bus terminals in to create routes for your citizens. Then you can do some more city building and pass it back again.

Yep, this is me. I was always into action RPGs and shooters until the little one came along. Now it's Minecraft and city infrastructure building games :D

Talking about Minecraft, we've even gone down the lines of making redstone-powered railways connecting the randomly generated villages... Super fun that you wouldn't have caught me doing ten, twenty years ago :slol:

Thanks for the recommendations, solid stuff. We'll have a look after school tonight and see which appeals. I bought him Mini Metro and Mini Motorways for his birthday this year, he quite enjoys them, but he does get a little frustrated that he can't fully design it all himself.

Great idea about passing it over to him as well, that's the bit he likes best, doing the routes and all that. I'll try not to be too precious about my save file, he can be a bit overzealous sometimes, the map of his sandbox mode save on Bus Simulator is an absolute abomination - 80-odd routes that just make no sense :slol:

Never got around to creating a regular bus route until today, so Westfield now has London buses!
