If barbarians are going to be tougher, they should at least be made to feel like actual lesser peoples/natives, instead of a faceless random annoyance.

You mean culture farms? :shifty:

They'll still be turn offable. It sounds like they're "harder" in the sense of more intelligent too, not just powered up. So keep your eyes open for the scout and if you see it dispose of it. If it gets away then start fortifying.

It looks fantastic :toot: The new way of displaying fog of war is very welcome as it makes it look like a map from Lord of the Rings. New gameplay elements like districts should help the game distinguish itself from Civ V, which is still very addictive. Hopefully Sean Bean has a big role, like the narrator, in the final game  .

My only reservation is that, when building units, their icons don't have pictures of the actual models. I disliked this in Beyond Earth as it made it harder to get used to the new additions and it made everything look monotonous. Thankfully buildings have colourful icons so it shouldn't be as big of a problem.

Really like the idea of the land around you playing an impact on your technology tree. My only reservation is really petty... I just don't like the size of the models

still day one 8-)

Sounds like city planning is going to be pretty in depth right from the get go.

$5.99 DLC, probably. :shifty:

I'm hoping to see a bit of a reshuffle in the civs they include in the base game - some returning favorites, some new ones, some from the DLCs of games past. Liven things up.

I've got to say, I'm not a fan of the pricing of this. £50 for the standalone game, or £70 for the Deluxe edition, which is basically the game and a season pass for the first four DLC packs. Although no doubt there'll be many more than 4, so it's an extra £20 for just a bit of the DLC. :|

Nice spot, thanks.

Still though, I don't remember previous Civ games having such high launch prices.

EDIT: I've just checked, and I bought the deluxe edition of Civ V on Steam before launch for £40.

I really don't like the more cartoonish art style they've gone for this time, looks like Civ Rev which imo, was strawberry floating awful casual friendly pap.

European Union
Leader:
Jean Claude Juncker
Traits:
Expansionist, bureaucratic, economic (depending on who you ask...)
Unique units:
MEP, gets a combat bonus against English fishing boats.
Brexiteer, resistance in cities captured by this unit is less effective as they don't fully research the situation and immediately regret their decision to rebel.
Unique improvements:
Gravy train railroad, which extracts 350 gold per turn from each puppet state and apparently prevents them from building hospitals and schools off their own back.
CAP farm, which doesn't actually produce any food.

Civ Rev (the first game) was a decent attempt at a stripped down console version of the game, not 'strawberry floating awful casual friendly pap'. Civ Rev 2 I never played but you might have something if that's what you were referencing.

Either way, the look of the game and how it plays are clearly two very different things. There are clear reasons for their graphical design choices which are actually related to adding stuff into the game rather than dumbing it down, so your fears seem to be baseless.

The devs did mention in some E3 videos that the change in visual style was a consequence of the new approach to cities. As specialist buildings/wonders etc now appear on tiles outside the central city tile, they wanted them to look more distinct than they did previously, rather than when they were all crammed into the same space together. It should also allow science/religion/production specialised cities to look distinct at a glance, apparently.

As long as the gameplay mechanics remain just as in depth then I'll be happy to overlook the slightly dodgy visual design choices.

I usually play Civ zoomed out anyway so it might not be too noticeable under 'normal' conditions, the leader models however are horrible no matter what anyone says.

Civ Rev 2 is a good game, the only real problem with it is that it is far too easy.

Definitely a stripped down experience, but on the plus side that means you can play an entire game in one sitting.
