This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

In a pretty cool game at the moment. Slow speed (one below marathon) on Large Europe as Germany at Immortal difficulty.

The slow speed really allows for extensive strategic military battles. I find that at faster speeds, the tech advances too quickly so that you never really get locked in with the likes of crossbowmen, knights etc.

Anyone else found themselves playing a lot more Civ in isolation? It's up there with Football Manager as the easiest way to lose countless hours of time, perfect for the current situation!

I actually bought it on PS4 because my laptop has always struggled a bit (especially with larger maps), it's given me a new lease of life. They did a great job of converting it, definitely more cumbersome but it works and in some ways it's helpful because it forces you to slow down.

So at a time when we'd all be clamouring for a big new expansion to sink our teeth into, they've announced that the next sort of expansion is going to slowly trickle out in bimonthly releases over the next year. :|

https://civilization.com/new-frontier-pass/

Sounds like a load of Civilization packs bundled up into a season pass.

Continue your quest to build your greatest empire with the Civilization VI - New Frontier Pass, featuring eight new civilizations and nine new leaders, and a variety of new gameplay content, including six new game modes. Delivering six DLC packs on a bimonthly basis from May 2020 to March 2021, the New Frontier Pass includes:

PACK 1: MAYA & GRAN COLOMBIA PACK
Available May 2020

Adds two new civilizations and leaders, one new game mode*, new City-States, Resources, and Natural Wonders.

PACK 2: ETHIOPIA PACK
Available July 2020

Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode**, one new District and two new Buildings.

PACK 3
Available September 2020

Adds two new civilizations and leaders, one new game mode**, new World Wonders, and one new map.

PACK 4
Available November 2020

Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode, new City-States, and numerous new Great People.

PACK 5
Available January 2021

Adds one new civilization and two new leaders***, one new game mode, a new District, and two new Buildings.

PACK 6
Available March 2021

Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode, new World Wonders, and one new map.

*New game mode requires the Gathering Storm expansion to play.

**New game mode requires either the Rise and Fall or Gathering Storm expansions to play.

***New leader requires Rise and Fall expansion to play.

Game modes can include additional content such as new units, buildings, or improvements and can be turned on or off during game setup to apply significant and dramatic changes to the rules of the game.

Don't like season passes, or want to wait and see what's worth picking up rather than paying for all that in one go? Oh no, looks like you'll be missing out on changes to existing leaders because the new persona packs for Teddy and Cathy are paywalled behind the bundle cost.

EXCLUSIVE BONUS: TEDDY ROOSEVELT AND CATHERINE DE MEDICI PERSONA PACKS
Two of Civilization VI's leaders are transformed with a new look and new abilities when you lead America and France! “Rough Rider Teddy” excels at keeping the peace on his home continent, and “Magnificence Catherine” can use Luxuries to overwhelm the world with Culture and Tourism. Each Persona Pack contains a brand new take on a favorite leader, with a new leader model and background, new gameplay bonuses, and an updated agenda that reflect the changes to the leader’s personality. The Persona Packs are available exclusively to owners of the New Frontier Pass and will be delivered with the second add-on pack.

Pretty underwhelmed by this. There had been rumours about a new expansion for a little while now, and I was hoping we were going to get something more substantial, that would finally make this version the compete package, the way Civ games always new a few expansions to be compete. Until we get details on these new games modes, this just feels a bit piecemeal.

Not expansion related, but I still really struggle to properly get into this version of the game. The level of city planning required by districts and wonders just isn't that enjoyable. I like to play Civ in a way where you allow your cities and civilisation to evolve naturally over time, and I'm much more concerned about making the better immediate choice, and seeing where that takes me, rather than having to pre plan what I might want this or that cities focus to be in a few eras time. The lack of space or ability to stack buildings in cities makes it so much more difficult to play this well, unless you're constantly thinking about the end game, which I just don't find a fun way to play.

I really didn't get on with Civ VI at all, I don't like the districts, the art style and the various other gameplay changes.

Thought the last expansion might improve the game but it actually put me off even more and I've barely touched it since.

Civ V however is still one of my most played games, clocking up an impressive 900+ hours.

Civilization VI is now free to download on the Epic Games Store until 28 May: https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/product/sid-meiers-civilization-vi/home

They've also launched a new, over-priced DLC pass, which will unlock content in six stages all the way through to March next year :fp:.

Having just finished the Revolutions podcast series on the South American revolutions of Bolivar and co, I am heartened to see Gran Columbia included. But I don't think I'll be getting no damn DLC pass.

Gran Colombia looks so overpowered for military victories, it's mental.

+1 movement to ALL units, a unit that buffs each other in adjacency, a constant supply of great generals, and promotions not ending turns.

Oh I know. :slol: To look at it in Civ, you'd never know the country didn't even make it until Bolivar's death.

I get that they had some great generals, but strawberry float, so did every country. Where's Rome's great general gravy train, eh?

I played a game as Brazil recently with real Earth starting locations and I turned out to be ridiculously overpowered.

The rainforest boosts are crazy and I was the only inhabitant of South America. USA never declares war and always wants to do trade. Also, Brazil have a unique naval unit relatively early on that is more powerful than a Battleship!

The balance issue is a major problem in this game. I think I've only ever managed one scenario where I didn't either get steamrolled or do the steamrolling.

I picked this up as my first Civ experience thanks to the epic giveaway and it does a terrible job of telling you what the strawberry float is going on without having massive walls of text.

Finally found the tutorial after about five hours of playing it and tried that which cleared up some things, but there’s still loads that I don’t really understand or can see a clear way of understanding.

I think I’ve played about four games so far and just been rinsed in every game other than the first where nothing was happening so I declared war on Norway who turned out to be strawberry floating everywhere and killed me off pretty quickly.

Can’t stop playing it though. Stupid game.

There is a very steep learning curve. But with ever defeat, we learn a little more, and get a little better.

IS the (original...not the season pass new DLC) worth it?

I'm ok with it on the switch but wonder if the DLC would make it shine?

Been playing this a little bit after getting it in the recent Humble Bundle and so far I think I prefer Civ V. The changes to the mechanics in this just aren't really clicking with me.

I like the Natural Disasters stuff from the expansion (Rising Storm I think?) but one thing I really dislike is the thing with Builders being a "Use 3 times then they're gone" rather than a permanent unit now. Having to waste time making more Builders fairly frequently as you expand is just really annoying. Not to mention it means that you have to do everything manually, rather than being able to set builders to an Automated mode if you wanted to (Or having manual control if you prefer).
Can't say I'm a fan of Roads now only being created by Traders rather than being something builders can create. Essentially cripples movement in the early game until you unlock way more trade routes to build more traders.

Gameplay wise, VI is so far just a big step backwards from V for me.

I got this free on epic. But I’ve not found the time or commitment to start it, as it sounds like it gets pretty addictive and needs a lot of learning…

I still keep meaning to play this more but I'm playing Warhammer Gladius at the moment. I only got about 30 hours in but I really liked it. Haven't played enough to say whether I prefer it to V but it's definitely a very good game.
