Is Netflix Planning The Ultimate Super Bowl Surprise With ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel?

EXCLUSIVE: We already told you that Paramount/Bad Robot’s Cloverfield sequel was getting acquired by Netflix, and that a Super Bowl spot is expected to air during the Big Game, however, we’re now hearing that the J.J. Abrams produced movie will be available to stream immediately following the end of the Big Game. A TV spot for the film is scheduled to drop around the end of the first quarter and inform fans about the pic’s availability tonight.

The latest Cloverfield is directed by Julius Onah and written by Oren Uziel and takes place on a space station. Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Chris O’Dowd, Ziyi Zhang and David Oyelowo star.

This Cloverfield sequel cost around an estimated $45M, and we hear that the Netflix deal makes the film immediately profitable.

Supposedly, the story may involve a scientific experiment in 2028, maybe out in space, which accidentally seeds Earth's past with terrible monsters, or opens up a hole into another dimension through which they came through.

But who knows, that might be bull.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very tense, had no idea what was "really" going on until the very end.

I really need to watch Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield. It's quite an interesting concept having unrelated sequels in the same universe.

You can add it to your list on Netflix UK, says it's coming today.

It's really good, incredibly tense. The film keeps you guessing throughout too, which makes it quite different (but still very enjoyable) on a rewatch.

I like Cloverfield but 10 Cloverfield Lane is the better film imo. I'm well up for watching a new one.

Yeah 10 Cloverfield Lane was unexpectedly great. Definitely don't read anything about it before you watch, though.

So a clover field sequel is out in 10 minute and I have no internet connection? Great

I was bored shitless by 10 Cloverfield Lane, I also thought the original Cloverfeild was dull as well.

I like this one. Chris O'Dowd was pretty good.

[Read first post] Oh awesome!
[Reads second post] Oh cool, a massive strawberry floating spoiler that reveals the whole plot for a film whose entire USP is it's mysterious nature! Saved me 2 hours!

What the strawberry float? Seriously.

Edit: Seemingly confirmed by the teaser. Brill.

10 Cloverfield Lane would have been a much better film if it wasn't a Cloverfield sequel. The last ten minutes was about as disappointing a climax to a film as I've ever seen.

Will probably still watch this, mind.

So this is a prequel to the original? I’m in!

Where does 10 Cloverfield Lane tie into all this then?

Has anyone else read about the Cloverfield universe being the Half-Life/Portal universe conspiracy? I saw it on reddit one time and it made a lot of sense, especially Cloverfield Lane.

Yeah I could probably agree with that. The Cloverfield stuff just feels shoehorned in (the ending especially is strawberry floating hilarious) and I think this would be a better film without all that. There's plenty of interesting ideas but none of them feel fleshed out

Plot is basically:
Fossil fuels running low blah blah blah need another form of sustainable energy
Experimental space station orbiting earth has a big particle accelerator thing they're testing for a new form of sustainable energy
Experiments constantly fail for about two years until finally it looks like it's working then BOOM something happens, the equipment on the deck explodes etc
When the crew come to and collect themselves they realise earth is gone
Turns out earth isn't gone and they are just on the other side of the sun but IN A PARALLEL DIMENSION that's a bit different and a crew member from that dimension's space station is now on their's
If you've seen Sunshine then you'll know how most of the film goes after that
Main character and the engineer guy are the only surviving crew members and they fire the experiment again and make it back to their dimension orbiting Earth again
They launch an escape pod shuttle thing and fly back down to Earth
Final shot is them flying down through the clouds then the CLOVERFIELD MONSTER bursts through the clouds and roars (strawberry float knows how tall it would have to be to read through the clouds btw) cut to black. I initially thought the monster gobbled them up as they were flying down so I had to skip back and watch it again but it doesn't look like it.

In between all this there's cuts to Earth with the main character's husband and yeah it turns out the experiment brought the monster from the first film to Earth from wherever.

EDIT: actually it's not the same Earth as the first film since this one is around 30 years into the future so I dunno lol

I'm counting down the days till the Half in the Bag review :datass:
