I don't think I ever shared this here, but this is something I was involved in with work a few years ago:

The launch day was mental. We thought we'd lost the bear, but it had stayed in the stratosphere for an extra hour  It was supposed to land in mid Wales but ended up near Poole :fp: When It landed it had 3 seconds of video space on the camera. I have all the footage.

With the way things are going, a supermassive black hole might be the only way to improve things.

Wiltshire feels like a black hole these days, there is just no escape from it, ever.

Wow. This image is so powerful, it really helps to visualise the sheer scope of the universe. There is so much filled in this image and it's just our view looking out across the our own milky way galaxy, which would appear as just a speck for anyone looking towards it with the naked eye from any other galaxy.

I think that's maybe the answer to the Fermi paradox.
Maybe most life in the universe existed a billion years ago and we just popped-up in a time without much going on. Would we know about a civilisation from even just 1m years ago which is nothing in cosmic time. Maybe our part of the universe is just abnormally devoid of life and the rest is teeming with it.

Yep, I'd hypothesise most old civilizations in the universe moved beyond the need to exist in physical form or be restricted by physical location. Also, there's endless ideas about the fabric of the universe and what's beyond; perhaps they've all left to explore other planes of existence or outer realms by now, if those places do exist.

I'm sure there are other baby civilizations like us all over the universe though.

It seems unfathomable to me that anyone can travel those distances. I mean, our own Solar System is tiny in the greater scheme of things, and yet it still takes light over a year to pass from one side to the other.

I genuinely think there are other races out there, but the distances are just to impossible for anyone to establish meaningful contact.

But I would LOVE to be wrong about this, because it's depressing thinking about it.

Around 100 years ago it would have seemed impossible to get to Australia in less than 24 hours.

All we need to do is invent Transwarp drive.
How hard can it be?
