Guys, strawberry float batman for a second and lets talk about The Watchmen. I read it last night and by strawberry float, it's fantastic. Almost certainly the best standalone graphic novel that exists today.

I'd agree with most of the sentiment. My holy triumvirate is Watchmen, Maus and Nightly News.

There are other works I like and aspire to but those three are the ones that push and twist the medium into shapes flights and tights just can't reach.

Yeah its great, but the only thing thats bothering me is the film adaptation and what its gonna do to the ending.
Anything less that whats in the source material will kill it for me.

I really want the film to be the greatest comic book adaption ever. But you just know it's just not gonna happen if they change the main story at all. I think it's this thread that said they may be downplaying one of the heroes, and i've read a rumour that the more gritty parts are going to replaced to make the film more a super hero flick

I don't think many of it made it into this country. Hence the ridiculous price. Same with the Black Dossier.

The whole thing about them releasing it in this country was to do with Copyright laws. The whole "it's pornography" uproar only occurred in America interestingly enough.

I was in FP a couple of years back due to a christmas rush the comic section was heaving, so took my comics upstairs instead. Got talking bout comics to one of the staff as I paid and he bought up Nightly News. I've never known anyone talk so passionately about a comic before. He really did sell it too me, and on top went and got his copy out the office and told me to read and tell me what I thought. I had to admit it was brilliant stuff even though I found it too be the most difficult comic i've ever read. Theres just so much extra stuff on the pages, you find it hard not to read the the little fact panels and not agree with it.

I recently got rid of it and am currently waiting on the TPB to arrive.

The TPB is awesome. It works better in trade IMO. I try and press the thing on anyone who'll listen to me. I've brought everything the guy has put his name to since.

It's genius the way he fuses graphic design elements to the narrative (and even uses humour in them) and the fact there is no traditional panel structure to speak of. Brilliant stuff.

Who are they downplaying? If the story is going to work, all of the heroes need to have their fair share of screen time, and the ending *MUST* stay the same. If the ending changes, everything that Watchmen was about just goes down the pan. It's an extremely difficult one to get right, and while I'm looking forward to it, I can't see it living up to the graphic novel in any way.

Batman RIP will not make ANY sense unless you've a) Been following Morrisons run for the last couple of years and b) have a pretty good knowledge of Bat-History.

The changes rumoured/confirmed are

No Pirate sub story

No psychic alien attack. It's a much more "conventional" attack designed to unite the world - aliens were felt to be too outlandish/out of touch with the film.

Hm. Still an oddity. It's not...bad per sey, but it's not brilliant.
It's definatly seems to have a far greater structure/planning than count down, but at the same time it seems over-planned...all we have no are different threads...they haven't come together yet so the book feels a little directionless.

Nice art though.

The back up story is nice...I love the Riddler, especially for the last few years so this was nice - Enigma seems to be what most people have been suggesting though.

yeah the pirates a seperate dvd with the dude from 300, like an anime or something

Popular theory seems to be that it's Dr Manhatten that "nukes" Washington, uniting the world against "Supers"...

I can accept the lack of the pirate substory - That's really there to describe the events in a more straightforward manner to the reader, and has little bearing on the main plot anyway. I can also accept the lack of a psychic alien attack as long as there's a suitable replacement. It's difficult to know what would work and what wouldn't though.

Oh, and Hexx. It works superbly well as a TPB, but having not read the individual comics I can't really comment. I know that I literally could not put it down from start to finish when I read it last night, and as a result didn't go to bed until 7am.
